Is Dak Prescott really worth $240M when the Cowboys can't even top an NBA record?

“Patience is a virtue.” This phrase applies to all walks of life, including sports, of course. Now, look at the case of the Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Back in 2021, when Jerry Jones, the GM  of the Cowboys signed Prescott, most of the audience said it wasn’t a great decision. The price spent for a 4-year contract was $160 million back in the day. And with time, the evaluation kept rising. Now that the former contract is on the verge of ending, the QB’s future with the team seemed more bleak than ever.

However, adding a twist to the story, the Dallas Cowboys have once again, signed Dak Prescott. This time too, the parties have shaken hands for a four-year deal, with a $240M extension. Yes, you’ve read that right. The new deal will make Dak the highest-paid player in NFL’s history. Moreover, this will keep the 31-year-old in the Cowboys jersey for seasons to come.

Unfortunately, fans aren’t particularly happy about this news. Given, Prescott’s past controversies, he’s been a matter of discussion among the fans. Despite being good on the field, the supporters of the Dallas Cowboys haven’t been quite fond of the NFL star. This time too, with the contract extension news, fans have stated: “Franz Wagner money.”  Dak Prescott hasn’t been in the good books of the audience, hence when the news arrived, criticisms followed.

However, some have also stated, that the German NBA star deserves more than ‘this’ (probably the $240M!). Moreover, LeBron James‘ $480M (approx) paycheck hasn’t been toppled yet. So, there’s a long way to go before Dak Prescott becomes the ‘LeBron James’ of the NFL. But, isn’t it strange to wonder why Prescott is one of the most disliked players in football at the moment? Surprisingly, you’ll never find a single ‘constructive’ criticism from the fans of the sport! But why?

Why does Dak Prescott face so much backlash from the NFL audience?

While Franz Wagner is collecting accolades for his skills as the small forward of the Orlando Magic, Dak Prescott’s stay in the NFL keeps getting difficult. Some fans have stated that Prescott receives more than Wagner when the opposite should’ve happened. This means Wagner’s pay should be raised instead. Since his debut in 2016, Dak Prescott has been with the Cowboys. His contract was renewed in 2021 and now again his contract has been renewed for 2025 onwards. But the chaos began when some chapters of his personal life came before public eyes. This somehow triggered the fans who then turned from supporters to detractors.

If you look at Prescott’s skills as the QB and face of the Dallas Cowboys, he has been doing a good job. However, there have been instances with Jerry Jones & Co. have lost to midfield or subpar teams. And as you can guess, all the blame fell on Dak Prescott’s shoulders. But is he as bad as people claim? Honestly speaking, Prescott has been more or less consistent throughout his career. It is only natural for an athlete to lose his or her form in a game or two; that doesn’t mean the player is ‘bad’. Moreover, a lot depends on the team management as well. The Cowboys haven’t won many major leagues in recent times, thus adding up to their desperation.

The main issue here is Dak Prescott’s performance depends on how well the team plays in a match. Moreover which team they’re playing against is also a point to be noted while ‘judging’ the quarterback. Until a better replacement is available, Jerry Jones won’t change his team’s face. The most important thing to remember here is the fact that Dak hasn’t truly had a bad season with the Cowboys. So, what’s the point of criticism? This remains unclear.
