In the inaugural In-Season tournament quarter-finals, the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Phoenix Suns. The purple and gold emerged victorious with a score of 106-103. However, the game was filled with controversies and drama, with the centerpiece of all being LeBron James. There was a disputed timeout call by James which would’ve had significant implications for each team. However, as the decision was in favor of the City of Angels, the Suns were very frustrated.

After revisiting the incident, Skip Bayless, the commentator on the ESPN2 show, spoke about it on his chat show “UNDISPUTED”.

A crucial moment occurred late in the fourth quarter, with the Lakers preserving a small lead. As LeBron James passed the ball to the rising star of the Lakers Austin Reaves, the Suns were tightly defending him and forced a turnover. However, as Reaves had lost possession of the ball, James called for a timeout, which caused a disagreement between the teams. The disagreement occurred since the ball had already become loose at that moment, and the Lakers were officially no longer in control. Because according to the guidelines, if possession of the ball is lost, a timeout cannot be granted.

Looking at this chaos, Bayless called LeBron James the most interesting man in sports because no game of James is just a run-of-the-mill contest, “there is always a dramatic subplot in every game played by the drama king”. He saw the footage of the game and said, “The ball was so gone before LeBron had calls timeout, it is loose.” To which Keyshawn Johnson said, “When you great like LeBron, you get certain calls anyways”.

Instead of arguing, Bayless agreed with him and said, “That is true.” But then he went on to ask a very valid question, “Does anybody besides LeBron James get that call in that moment? Because I don’t think the ref at the far side of the floor is going to respect the basketball IQ of any other player.” To that, Johnson answered by saying, “I would say the dudes on his level, KD, Steph, they are all on his basketball IQ level. They are the faces of the league, so they would probably get the call.”

Drama aside, LeBron James’ performance against the Suns

James yet again demonstrated his athleticism, proving to be the Lakers’ best player. His effect on both sides of the court was evident, with 31 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. The L-train’s effort, comparable to a win-or-go-home situation, demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the league’s finest players.

The debate surrounding the timeout call brings an added dimension of drama to the Lakers’ trip as they proceed to the next stage in Las Vegas. The argument about the officials’ judgment will go on, providing a reminder of the narrow margins and pivotal moments that define the importance of basketball battles, particularly in win-or-go-home circumstances.
