Zion Williamson, once touted as a generational talent, has found himself at the center of fan backlash after a video of him getting a back tattoo went viral. While tattoos are far from controversial, the timing and context of this clip have enraged fans. With Zion’s fitness and availability for the Pelicans already under scrutiny, the sight of him appearing out of shape—with a noticeable belly—has only fueled frustrations.
Many expected him to be laser-focused on rehabbing and conditioning to make a strong return, but instead, this clip has reignited debates about his priorities and long-term potential in the NBA. Adding to fans’ discontent, Zion’s return to action seems far from imminent.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Pelicans star is “not close to a return” as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury. Williamson initially suffered the strain in a Nov. 6 loss to the Cavaliers after missing two games prior due to hamstring tightness. The Pelicans later announced he was out “indefinitely.” Charania further reports that he will be sidelined for an extended period.

With Zion already missing seven games since the injury, New Orleans has struggled, going just 1-6 without their two-time All-Star forward. Needless to say, this uncertainty surrounding Williamson’s recovery timeline has only compounded fan frustrations.
One comment captured the growing sentiment: “At this point, does anyone really care? His career has been one of the most disappointing from what he was projected to be, and the NBA has moved on from him just like they did from Ja Morant. The 30 for 30 on their careers will be sad.”

Ahead of the season, the 24-year-old had shocked us with his insane transformation. According to Ian Casselberry of Yahoo Sports, Zion Williamson had dropped to 281, lower than his listed weight when at Duke, which was 285! Furthermore, it’s noteworthy that the star forward has been on the weight loss journey since last December and his goal was to be 272 when the season gets underway.
However, looking at things now, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that he’s fallen back at least a little on those keeping fit goals. And fans are not scared to call it out, at all.
Zion Williamson’s tattoo clip sparks heavy backlash as fans slam his focus and fitness
“I’m not one to body shame but god damn bruh they paying you a quarter of a million to be a professional athlete. Least you could do is act like you train once in a while, even had a cameo with food in this video smh,” wrote one user under the viral tattoo video. Now, the tattoo in itself – a brilliant, full-size anime-inspired artwork – is spectacular. But it was the circumstance that really did it for him.
And this fan’s comment underscores a broader frustration with his career trajectory. As you know, Zion Williamson entered the league as one of the most celebrated prospects in recent memory, celebrated for his explosive athleticism and unique skill set. As such, the exasperation of not seeing him live up to it, or at least close to it, has many disappointed.
Add the financial investment the Pels have made in him – a 5-year $193 million extension, with the potential to reach $231 million based on performance incentives. And the frustration has doubled. Making things worse was a brief shot of food. To fans, it came across as a lack of focus and effort, especially given the ongoing concerns about his fitness.

Another fan took this moment to direct a dig at a handful of other injury-prone players, as well. “That belly is crazy. And then these idiots like him, Embiid and CP3 wonder why they are always injured. Professionals should not be lazy and overweight. Maybe I’m crazy.”
While Embiid has dealt with injuries largely tied to his size and history of surgeries, he has worked to improve his conditioning over the years. Chris Paul, despite his smaller frame and leadership qualities, has faced recurring hamstring and other soft-tissue injuries, often late in crucial playoff runs.
In the 2x All-Star’s case, his combination of size, explosive play style, and ongoing fitness issues makes him particularly susceptible to these kinds of critiques. But what’s more? Being the former No. 1 pick and comparisons to LeBron James essentially magnify the scrutiny. And it doesn’t help when visible signs – like the ‘hanging belly’ – contrast with the discipline generally required for greatness.

This next fan’s genuine disappointment is too apparent in his words. “Bro idk what to say anymore man. It’s year 6 WTF man,” the guys commented. Aimed at his inconsistent performances, this sentiment echoes the majority who are tired of not just Zion’s injuries, but his perceived lack of accountability.
And finally, this user seems to have just given up. “Zion is, sadly, quickly becoming one of those ‘what-if’ stories. When he’s healthy, he’s a star, but he just can’t stay healthy.” Williamson’s ability when healthy is undeniable. His dominance in the paint, incredible athleticism, and unique skill set have made him one of the most exciting players in the NBA.

But since drafting in 2019, the man has missed more games than he has played. As such, the narrative of ‘Zanos’ becoming another “what-if” player seems to have taken root. For them, the frustration lies in the disconnect. They have seen Zion excel on the court. But the constant injuries, coupled with concerns about his conditioning, suggest a player unable to sustain greatness over time.
Ultimately, the viral clip has fueled the narrative that Zion Williamson’s career is at a crossroads—one that fans had hoped would lead to superstardom, not prolonged disappointment.
