On Sunday, in a showdown that had basketball fans on the edge of their seats, the New Orleans Pelicans mauled the San Antonio Spurs with a resounding 146-110 victory. However, the triumph did little to distract Zion Williamson from acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by the Spurs’ rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama. Zion and Wemby went head to head for the first time. Everyone was spellbound by watching two titans of basketball go at each other.

Victor Wembanyama’s dominance challenges the best

In the aftermath of the game, Williamson couldn’t help but marvel at Wembanyama’s prowess. “He’s going to be a matchup nightmare because he can get his shot off whenever he wants.” Williamson remarked, emphasizing the matchup nightmare that the 7’4″ rookie presented. An astute analysis by Williamson showed that Wembanyama could shoot at will and simply had to release the shot. As Zion said, “His presence alone can alter a lot of shots. He has long arms and is tall, so just his presence alone can affect the offense on the other side.”

The Pelicans’ star realized that Wembanyama can keep developing under an NBA-style offense, and he says the rookie’s long arms on top of his height change things completely as teams adjust their offense to guard against him.

Game statistics demonstrated the individual brilliance of both players. Williamson had a good game for the Pelicans, with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in their win. Meanwhile, Wembanyama was another who turned in an amazingly steady showing. He led the Spurs with 17 points and had 13 rebounds (one of his eighth game running of double-doubles). Wemby set a record for the NBA leaving behind Dwight Howard who did it in 2005.

Even in the face of a 36-point Spurs win, Popovich summed up the lopsided game by saying, Well, let’s see. That’s what you call an a** whooping. Pure and simple. Drop the mic. Period. Full stop, all that kind of stuff. They had a great night shooting. We couldn’t throw it in the ocean.”
