One can only stare at the NBA’s latest media rights deal. The league has reportedly signed an 11-year deal worth $76 billion (approx) or $6.9 billion annually – a 2.6x increase than the previous deal. Despite that, two media veterans argued that the biggest balling league could lose its American audience. And importantly, they pointed their fingers at the 2024 #1 pick prospect Zaccharie Risacher and fellow draft picks.
Adam Silver, on the other hand, brought various amendments into the league, notably In-Season, Play-In tournaments, and many other things. Eventually, making his case for one of the best Commissioners in the league’s history. Nevertheless, Silver seemed to have lost his trick, as Steve Hartman listed the reasons behind the NBA’s possible fall.
Firstly, Hartman clarified why he felt the league was in danger. Sitting alongside Rich Ohrnberger on a Fox Sports radio show, he said, “It’s working for them in terms of these television contracts. They’re going to have the richest television deals of all time. It’s not about the finances… (it’s) about rich social media buzz. Are people talking about the NBA?”

Ohrnberger added, “You’re telling me that Zaccharie Risacher, he’s not doing it for you?” Hartman continued by saying that the foreign players “are not moving the needle”. He further argued that 3 of the top 8 prospects for the 2024 draft were from France and said, “No one’s going to be talking about this.”
Moreover, they went on to make a strong case, arguing that Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo are helping the league with their MVP stature because of their “foreign” identity. Although they cut some slack for Victor Wembanyama, pointing at his physical stature. However, Hartman earlier went after him as well, saying, the Spurs’ record before and after Wemby’s arrival remained the same (22-60).
Above all, the duo went on to drop a solution for the imposing problem. Hartman argued that the league will need someone who can “move the needle” and adding to it, Ohrnberger said, “What they need is an American player… a homegrown talent that comes from a school that we recognize.”
Has Adam Silver led the league to its shortfall?
Well, there is no definite answer for it. In terms of business and finances, the league has definitely grown into a big wig. At the same time, as the media veterans pointed out, the league sure does lack in certain departments.
When it comes down to having a homegrown superstar, the league hasn’t produced one since Stephen Curry and LeBron James. Even though Anthony Edwards has come up the ranks in the last few seasons, the 22-year-old still has a long way to go.
Apart from that, the league’s Finals viewership ratings have dropped considerably. Especially, the Boston Celtics vs Dallas Mavericks Finals series saw the lowest viewership in the last 3 years. Importantly, the league has been struggling to reach up to the pre-pandemic ratings, as per Forbes. On the other hand, there are conversations surrounding the audience’s increased interest in the NHL Finals than the NBA Finals.
