The much-anticipated game could see the Ace playing against the tenacious Liberty, to whom the Aces lost that night. On August 15, 2023, the Las Vegas Aces faced the New York Liberty with some serious money on the line. With the highly-anticipated WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final mere hours away, Gray sat down to talk to the media and answer their questions.

Chelsea Gray found herself in an awkward situation when she was asked if the league is doing enough to generate revenue from a player’s perspective. Upon hearing this question, Gray, who was renowned for both her skill on the court and her insightful observations off of it, stumbled a little.

She let out a tense chuckle that appeared to imply that it might have been a touchy subject. Gray said, “You’re trying to get me fined“.

The interviewer went on to clarify his question by pointing out the various initiatives that the league has undertaken to support its players. Notably, chartered travel and enhanced player salaries. The interviewer wanted to know about where the league might need to refocus, from the perspective of a player.

Gray kept her response to a minimum, as she did not want to land in trouble. She said,

“Yeah, I think there’s always improvement to be done. On everything that you notice, salary, compensation, travel. I’ll just leave it there.”

However, luck a not on her side as merely hours later,?the New York Liberty bagged the 2023 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The Liberty’s bench strength, a vital edge they enjoyed over the Aces, underlined their victory. Multiple All-Stars make up the Aces’ fearsome starting lineup. However, the Liberty was able to respond with their firepower, including significant scoring contributions from their bench. With a combined 25 points, Marine Johannes and Kayla Thornton were crucial off the bench. The Liberty led by eight points after the third quarter thanks to Thornton’s two important 3-pointers. And the Aces were unable to close that deficit throughout the rest of the game.

Liberty’s victory resulted in individual honors of $30,000 for each participant. Furthermore,? the non-profit they selected, the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center received a donation of $10,000. The National Alliance on Mental Illness also got a $5,000 donation as the Aces’ official charity.
