The French phenom Victor Wembanyama has captivated the league with his rookie numbers. His unicorn-esque blend of size, skill, and shooting has been nothing short of extraordinary. But with the awe, there are whispers of concern that he should be more dominant than he is now. San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has five championships under his belt as he is trying to rebuild Spurs with Wemby. So many argue that Wemby should keep alive Pop’s legacy.

In the latest episode of ‘It is What It Is’, Cam’ron, Ma$e & Treasure “Stat Baby” Wilson has a candid discussion about Wemby’s performance and what he needs to do to be more lethal and uplift Popovich’s honor.

Wemby advised to be more aggressive

Cam’ron kicked off the discussion, saying that Popovich might have already contemplated retirement if it weren’t for the potential he sees in Wembanyama. His advice to Wemby is to be more aggressive. “You gotta take this serious. You gotta start taking this way more serious,” Ma$e asserted. He called for Wemby to embrace the “assassin” mentality to “just go crazy on everybody, every night, put somebody in the basket for real.”

On average, Wembanyama is putting up 19 points and grabbing 10.9 rebounds. The numbers look good on paper, but Cam’ron believes something is missing when he watches the games closely.“I don’t see the eye of the tiger, so to speak,” Cam’ron said. “It looks like he can probably get these(numbers) in his sleep”, given his size and skill. The concern here is that he needs to bring in more effort for his coach.

The Hall of Famer coach has a stellar record, and the team needs to step up and give him another trophy. With retirement looming on the horizon, Wembanyama holds the key to whether Popovich’s final years as a coach will be a triumphant swansong or a struggle for relevance.

The call is clear. Wembanyama needs to elevate his mindset to compete with the rest of the league. They already have a great strategy in their hands with Wemby playing at the center and it is working in their favor. The Spurs have climbed to a top 5 defense ever since he started playing in the position. Wemby’s scoring assists and rebounds have significantly improved in the last few games.
