Wyc Grousbeck bought the Celtics franchise in 2002. It’s a fact that the 63-year-old entrepreneur knows a thing or two about running a team in these two decades. Yesterday, he broke the internet after selling the team for a whopping $6.1 billion to a Boston-based entrepreneur, Bill Chisholm. It’s strange that Grousbeck took this call amidst the team’s crucial run but he didn’t do it in haste, as the former owner dropped crucial advice to Chisholm.
A lot of you might still be wondering how a new owner could abruptly take over a legacy franchise. However, Wyc did consider it and carried out a vigorous process to select the next owner. It all began when the team was up for sale only weeks after they had won the 2024 championship. Since then, the ownership group has put together serious efforts to select the next majority owner.
Describing the selection process, Wyc Grousbeck said, “We had a final sort of like March Madness of our last week,” in his interview with NBC Sports. Moreover, he added that the process involved help from partners and professional advisers, saying, “Bill’s bid stood out. He really wants it and he is going to be a great lead owner… He’s a great person. I couldn’t be more happy for the Celtics.”

Well, that’s a promising thing to hear for a Celtics fan. At the same time, the fan might wish that Bill Chisholm took a piece of Grousbeck moving forward. Considering that the team is dependent on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown‘s services for at least the next decade, Chisholm should carry a piece of Wyc who built the team from scratch. Well, the longtime Celtic steward did have some advice, saying, “If I’ve given him any advice but I think it was, be yourself. You are a fan. The fans are going to love you.”
The advice also came with a heads-up. Wyc continued, “You’re not gonna win every game, but they want to see that you care that you’re a fan who bought the team… We’re going to be fans who are running this team for Celtic Pride.” Now that we know Bill can be a great owner, let’s find out what Wyc truly feels about him.

Before going into Wyc’s statement, it’s important to establish the new equation between the duo. You might think Wyc Grousbeck would walk away and completely cut his ties with the team. That’s not the case. In the mega $6.1 billion deal, there is a crucial clause. Despite transferring the ownership to Chisholm, Grousbeck will remain the Governor of the franchise until the 2027-28 season.
It not only shows the bond between the two owners, but also the love for the team to transfer the ownership smoothly. Anyway, let’s hear from the franchise leader how he feels about the new owner. In the same interview, featuring Chisholm, Wyc said, “The minute I met bill I felt a strong affinity for him and what he was bringing to the table, and it’s developed over these past months.“
How much ever you deal with the numbers and portfolios, nothing comes better than a sense of feeling. The former owner seemed to have found a secure feeling in selling the team to the lesser-known entrepreneur. Moreover, he also got the nod from the superstar himself.
