The 2023-24 NBA season was, in a word, insane. The teams and players we thought would make a splash barely disturbed the surface. On the other hand, the ones we hadn’t paid much attention to broke out on a run like no other and we were forced to pay close attention. And it seems Netflix also agrees. So much so that they created a 10-part series, Starting 5, which features the intense behind-the-scenes of five (duh!) of the NBA’s biggest stars – LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, Domantas Sabonis, Jayson Tatum, and Jimmy Butler.
Netflix, for its part, celebrated its premiere at the iconic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Unsurprisingly, the leading men of the series were all at hand. And, here’s where it gets hilarious, ANT turned up in an interesting ensemble. Oh no, don’t worry! It’s nothing like Ben Simmons’ Garden of Time attire. In fact, it’s a far cry from that.
The Timberwolves superstar wore a simple gray hoodie with black track pants. Yes, you read that right. The guy who could potentially be the face of the NBA turned up looking like he was just stepping out for grocery chopping. And Gilbert Arenas was fuming at Edwards’ nonchalance. Known for giving it straight, he did not hold back this time, either.

“It’s a big deal … [because] when we think about the elite, the faces of the league, we’re thinking, ‘Would Jordan have showed up like that?’ He needs to think in the realm of greatness,” Gil said in the latest episode of his podcast. Arenas also mentioned the point that many of you might be thinking right now – comfort. From a casual perception, it is a valid point. Who are we to question Ant-Man if he prefers comfort over fashion?
However, there is this little thing called ‘context’. “It’s some of the most elite people … they’re going to be dressed enough to come near and meet the stars. So, you’re talking about a little classier,” the ex-Warriors star pointed out. He did not fail to point out that among all the chic, tasteful fashion choices, Anthony Edwards “would have been the worst dressed.”
Well, Gilbert made it clear that he wasn’t a fan of the 23-year-old’s questionable fashion choice. But do you know who thoroughly enjoyed it? KAT.
Karl-Anthony Towns cracks up over Anthony Edwards’ “gas station” look
There is no way Edwards’ new look is not going to get its fair share of attention from fans. And one comment from a particular fan seems to have really tickled Towns’ funny bones. “Ant pulled up to a Netflix premiere like he was making a gas station run lmaoo,” was the comment in question.
What’s your perspective on:
Would Michael Jordan ever show up in such an outfit? Is today's NBA too flashy?
Have an interesting take?
KAT wasted no time re-sharing the post in his IG story, tagging Anthony Edwards along with a bunch of laughing emojis. The OG source of the said post was Bleacher Report, which posted the photos with an equally hilarious caption. “Ant kept it chill alongside Bron, Jimmy, Tatum & Sabonis for their docuseries premiere,” followed by a laughing and popcorn emoji.

So, yeah, in a way, we can’t really blame Gilbert Arenas for getting mad. As you saw above, literally everyone is dressed to the nines. And then comes Anthony Edwards in the most basic attire. If you look closely enough, you can see stains, too (as pointed out by very helpful fans).
Aside from the five, other notable attendees included Mike Tyson, Jarred Vanderbilt and DeMar DeRozan, Coach Mike Brown, Kings’ owner Vivek Randivé, and influencers like Skilla Baby, Kayla Nicole, and Rome Flynn. Following the screening, further festivities continued at The Spotlight in Hollywood.
