A variety of personalities uniting arguably staged the coming together of the Golden State Warriors dynasty. The best thing that happened to them could be Steve Kerr becoming the head coach. A passionate competitor, his strict standards and animated nature allow him to do one important thing. No matter the stature of the player, the 9x NBA Champ is willing to hold them accountable. Against the Celtics, his fury found a way through. The target was the head of the table – Stephen Curry.
Steve Kerr has broken backboards before, charged at referees, and had tough conversations with his players. But with Curry, the boss barely needs to ask much of him. But against the Shamrocks, when a critical turnover cost the Warriors a three, he didn’t spare the Splash Bro either. His explosive outburst caught the eye of many, but one man watching closely was Draymond Green.
Being the leader of the team, Green contributes to ensuring the dynamics remain stable. So when he saw Steve Kerr’s furious reaction, the 34-year-old knew he needed to have a conversation with his longtime teammate. “When I saw it, I just go to Steph and reassure him like we good like f–k that. Let’s move on just to make sure he stays in the right place,” he revealed.

But in doing so, Draymond Green also has to monitor how the Chef reacts to Kerr’s criticism. “I’m watching Steph’s reaction and how he responds to it because if he responds negatively and when I say negatively, I don’t mean arguing. I mean like play, you know what I’m saying, demeanor. If he responds negatively, I’ve already told myself I need to go talk to coach,” Warriors’ floor general said on the Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.
“That’s already my mindset because again you have to keep an eye on all of these things. You have to know what makes your guys tick and what makes them not you know what I’m saying so I’m watching that like a hawk,” Draymond Green explained.
In such an instance, the defensive forward would have to convey the same to Steve Kerr. It becomes a topic to address because of Stephen Curry’s pivotal role as the anchor for anything and everything that happens in the Bay Area. Thankfully, it wasn’t necessary. The legendary Splash Bro walked to the bench, listened in between the HC’s rage, and made amends for his mistakes.

As the face of the franchise, Curry’s responsibilities go beyond playing great basketball. He has to set the tempo and establish the benchmark, by example. Hence, Green remains attentive to his state during a game. “There’s so many more things that you have to deal with,” the veteran said about being the frontal force of an NBA team. But while the playmaking forward watched intently, Steve Kerr doesn’t have to worry.

An admirable trait about Stephen Curry is he wants the coach to be as frank as possible to truly push him to the boundaries of being his best. “The beauty of Steph is that I can yell at him,” Kerr candidly admitted after the game.
Given the rampant start the Warriors have made this season, Stephen Curry, in his last few years, wants to upkeep a top-notch standard that spreads across the organization. So if he makes a grave error, the two-time MVP doesn’t mind putting his pride to the back. “I want to be coached just like everyone else, so I don’t get sensitive about getting yelled at if I make a dumb play, especially if it leads to a three on the other end,” he admitted postgame.
His openness with Steve Kerr has enabled them to connect beyond the simple confines of a coach and his star player. The veteran HC sees in Stephen Curry the direction of the franchise. His demeanor cloaks other players influenced by him. So from Steve Kerr’s perspective, he can’t be harder on anyone else than the Baby Face Assassin purely due to his influence.

The methods do wonders for Stephen Curry too. After that error, even when GSW trailed in the 4th quarter against the defending Champs, Curry was unfazed. He scored 10 points in the 4th, the most for any player, and hit the ‘night-night’ seal to thwart the Celtics. And after Kerr’s infuriated retort, the Chef didn’t turn the ball over again. That’s the product of a great bond between player and coach.
