It’s no secret that women’s basketball is subject to much criticism and ridicule. The same can be said of the players as well. But when you have highly respected entities like LeBron James backing these fearless women, there are results to it. And when King James has a special friendship with the WNBA star, A’ja Wilson; you can imagine the outcome. Often LeBron can be seen congratulating or posting updates on A’ja with his favorite nickname for her, ‘little sister’.

Even with such backing, A’ja reveals the sad truth behind the life she and her teammates live. It isn’t ideal, but no historical changes have happened overnight or by keeping quiet. On the flip side, she mentions just how deep her friendship with Bron runs.

Joining the crew of Showtime Basketball, Las Vegas Aces superstar, Wilson opens up about her friendship with James. So, do the two really have a close relationship? Talking about the same, she says, “Bron’s my dawg … we’re not besties but like, realistically, I always appreciate him.”

The ‘kid from Akron’ has been an inspirational figure for youngsters around the world. Basketball or no basketball. But when the child on the other end is someone like A’ja Wilson, one can imagine the impact the ‘King James’ must have had on her young mind.

Elaborating further, Wilson throws light on how James doesn’t have any need to show his support but does it, anyway. The 2x WNBA DPOY mentions this in the context of the irony of certain trolls that go around the internet. “When I go click on your bio and you’re like, “Oh! King James fan,” she chuckles. “I’m like, “How are you bashing me when the guy that you idolize is really cool with me?” So, it’s kind of like that respect.”

To meet your idol would be a dream come true, but for the same person to acknowledge you in public is the next level. That is exactly what the 2x WNBA champion is still in awe of. Of course, the 27-year-old South Carolina product’s elite skills and personality are what got her the much-deserved respect from the iconic superstar.

Wilson is unapologetically herself and proud of it

In a world where sports have turned into ‘sportainment’, a majority of the players tend to forget their true purpose. Basketball is no different. Started as a way to have fun during winter, inside, and a source of exercise for young boys, James Naismith couldn’t have imagined the kind of lucrative business it has turned into now.

But even amongst such changes, A’ja Wilson remains true to the spirit of basketball. Never satisfied with the long list of accolades she has amassed, Wilson continues to pursue her dream of being the GOAT. Just 27 years old, and her resume is as long as LeBron’s. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she surpasses the King himself!

Appearing on Paul George’s podcast in May, PG referred to her hunger for greatness and asked if she ever feels the pressure of such a hefty statement. And her reply is the most important part. “It’s fun.” Getting caught up with deals, fame, endorsements, controversies, fights, and whatnot, many players forget the real dream Naismith had in mind.

But not A’ja Wilson. If more players and the NBA in entirety could accept or model their way of thinking to Wilson’s, they wouldn’t be suffering now. Do you agree with this line of thought? Let us know your perspective in the comments below!
