Dijonai Carrington's call-out to Adam Silver—Is the NBA doing enough for the WNBA?

The Boston fans have had a fantastic year so far. From witnessing the dominant Celtics fold guarding the TD Garden fortress with a 37-4 record to the players lifting the much-awaited Larry O’Brien trophy. A few months after the 2024 Finals glory, the arena had yet another historic moment involving the Connecticut Sun team. Amidst the situation, Sun’s star DiJonai Carrington linked up with Jayson Tatum before firing shots at Adam Silver for ‘disrespecting’ the WNBA team.

Firstly, let’s look into the monumental event in American basketball history. The Connecticut Sun became the first WNBA team to ever play at the Celtics’ meritorious battleground, TD Garden. The legendary Celtics side played their first-ever game in the Garden on September 29, 1995. Following that, the arena showcased some of the staggering moments in NBA history, making it one of the iconic arenas of the NBA. Almost three decades later, the fans witnessed their first WNBA game between the Sun and LA Sparks.

The game went down the wire, and the Sun’s 14-0 run at the end saved the night with a 69-61 win. DiJonai Carrington played the anchor role dropping 19 points and 4 rebounds to take the team to glory. Importantly, she wasn’t dominant just on the court, but also off the court, calling out Adam Silver, who is responsible for the media organizations built around the WNBA. But, before that, Carrington linked up with Jayson Tatum, who pulled for the game.

JT sat on the courtside seats of the game, hugged Carrington after the game, and posed for a picture. Apart from Tatum, even the Celtics’ newest member, Jrue Holiday, also showed up at the game. Importantly, the two Olympians also got the chance to meet the Celts fans after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. And, also a quick meet-up before the 2024-25 championship defending season.

Why did DiJonai Carrington rile up against Adam Silver?

The Sun’s match-up at TD Garden didn’t happen out of the blue. In April, during a Q&A session with season ticket holders, Connecticut Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti already revealed the plans to host the LA Sparks again in front of 16,000 fans. And rightfully so, the arena turned jam-packed for its first-ever WNBA game.

However, there still seemed to be disappointment among the Sun’s fold. Especially with DiJonai Carrington. Following the game, the star baller took to the post-game press conference and made a massive remark. Disappointed with the management not nationally telecasting the game, she said, “Connecticut as a franchise is historically disrespected. I think they could have bring in a lot of publicity and promo.”

Moreover, she further went on to add, “I think there could have been a lot more of publicity or promo from the top,” stating the team had already announced the game, a year ago. Apart from that, Carrington further said, The game should have been on the national television broadcast… You shouldn’t have to pay for any type of subscription to see a game that’s this historic, in my opinion.”
