Why did Grant Hill dodge the Caitlin Clark question? Is he afraid of the backlash?

The Paris Olympics are right around the corner. However, basketball fans are still having a hard time wrapping their head around Caitlin Clark not making the Team USA roster. Arguably the most famous player in Women’s basketball today and performing beyond expectations in her rookie season so far, many expected her to be an instant choice. So, with people still questioning the committee’s decision, Team USA’s MD Grant Hill was put under the spotlight on live TV for the Caitlin snub, which he seems to have evaded!

Joining the commentary panel in today’s showcase game between Team USA and Canada, Grant Hill was put in a tough spot by veteran announcer Gus Johnson as he asked the Hall of Famer, “How are you not gonna have your people throw Caitlin Clark on the United States National Team?” But Hill masterfully saved himself from further questioning within seconds, saying, “So I’m the managing director of the men’s national team. I have nothing to do…” the panel burst out laughing before he could finish.

Becoming the MD of the men’s national team three years ago, Hill holds the responsibility of choosing the athletes who represent the nation on the world stage. However, he claims to have no say in the women’s team selection. As for the Paris Olympics, the Team USA Women’s roster was selected by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team committee, which includes several greats of the game like Bethany Donaphin, Dawn Staley, Dan Padover, and more. Then, the team also had to be approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors. So, Hill might not be the right guy to ask why Caitlin was left off the team despite her incredible performance.

Although Hill seems to have dodged the controversial Caitlin Clark question, he did not forget to give the rookie her props as he praised the women’s team that was selected for Paris. “Well, I’ll tell you this. I think our young rookies in the WNBA are fantastic and they have such a bright future in front of them, but our team is gonna be pretty dominant as it is. But I had nothing to do with it,” he said. And while Clark did not make it, the selected 12 are accomplished WNBA stars who’ve won multiple Olympic Golds in the past.

Even CC is excited to watch the women take over on the world stage despite her not making the team. “I’m gonna watch it. I love it.” Apart from being a competitive player, Clark is also a passionate fan of the game. She’s eagerly waiting for both the men’s and women’s teams to win Gold in Paris and bring glory back to the USA.

On the bright side, she hopes to achieve that dream in the next Olympics, “Honestly, no disappointment. It just gives me something to work for… Hopefully, when four years comes back, I can be there.” Until then, Clark can focus on building her legacy in the WNBA and support her peers, amidst all the chaos on the hardwood, as they get ready to compete in the Olympics.
