Liz Cambage had an exceptional WNBA career before making it to the Aces roster. The Tulsa Shock drafted her in the 2011 WNBA draft as the second overall pick. In just her rookie season, she averaged an impressive 11.5 PPG and 4.7 RPG, earning All-Rookie team honors. She went on to have an incredible career since, getting 4 WNBA All-Star nods, and also winning the Peak Performer award in 2018. She also held the record for most points scored in a game, dropping 53 points during her stint with the Dallas Wings.

Her time with the Aces too was impressive, maintaining an average of 8.2 RPG throughout her stint. However, her incredible accomplishments have been overshadowed by her innumerable controversies. The Australian national made a reputed name for herself in the WNBA but currently finds herself without a WNBA contract. Here’s why.

Cambage has headlined major controversies

Cambage was selected to represent her national team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, Cambage bashed the Australian Olympics committee for only showing white players in their promotional photos for the games. Following her statements about the committee, she claimed that she would still participate in the Olympics. However, she later withdrew from the tournament citing mental health issues.

She further angered the basketball world when she was accused of using a racist slur against the Nigerian national team in a warmup game in 2021. They accused her of calling the players “monkeys” after a physical altercation with a few players. They also accused Cambage of saying “go back to your third world country” to the Nigerian players.

After joining the Los Angeles Sparks in 2022, she said, “I’m supported, I’m protected on a level the Opals or the Australian team never gave to me“. Her comments received extensive backlash from former NBA players and Australian nationals. Eventually, she also opened an OnlyFans account, where she has been active lately.
