The San Antonio Spurs face their toughest test of this season when they meet the Celtics for a game on February 12. San Antonio has experienced major ups and downs throughout this year yet this upcoming game poses an opportunity to attract significant attention. Of course for both Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. They stand to beat an elite team from the league rankings. Such a victory would definitely create significant attention in the league.

And obviously, all eyes are on Victor Wembanyama. He’s the guy. The future. The franchise. He’s already proving that he’s one of the most dominant forces in the NBA, and this matchup is another chance for him to show the world just how special he is. But the big question—will he actually be on the court for this one? Spurs fans definitely want to know.

Good news—Wemby’s expected to play. The team has been keeping a close eye on his minutes, trying to make sure he stays fresh for the long haul, but he should be good to go. And let’s be real, San Antonio needs him out there.

The bad news? The Spurs are still a little thin in the frontcourt. Charles Bassey (knee) and Riley Minix (torn labrum) are still out, so that means Chris Paul and Sandro Mamukelashvili are gonna have to step up and give Wemby some help inside.

Boston, on the other hand, has some problems of their own. Jrue Holiday is out with a shoulder injury and Jaylen Brown? He’s questionable with a knee issue. If Brown can’t go, that’s a massive loss for the Celtics, since he’s one of their best two-way players. Boston might be missing a few key guys, which could tilt things in the Spurs’ favor.

Sure, they still have Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis, but no Holiday and maybe no Brown. That makes this game a lot more interesting. Let’s take a look at the Spurs’ depth chart.

Is this the game where Wembanyama cements his status as the Spurs' franchise cornerstone?

Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs’ game plan

Wembanyama stands as the essential factor for the Spurs to achieve an upset victory in this game. The dude is just ridiculous! Wembanyama delivers 24.4 points with 11 rebounds, and 3.6 assists alongside a league-high 3.9 blocks per game this season. The 21-year-old extends his movements beyond boundaries to protect the rim and score in all areas of the offense which creates havoc for opponents on defense.

Before this matchup, he dominated the Wizards game by scoring 31 points with 15 rebounds and blocking 3 shots. The absence of Jaylen Brown should enable Wemby to use his dominant game style more freely.

But it’s not just about Wemby. De’Aaron Fox has been a game-changer for the Spurs. His speed, scoring, and ability to push the pace make a huge difference, and if he’s on, that gives San Antonio a real shot. Devin Vassell has also stepped up as a legit second option, and depending on how Boston defends Wembanyama, he might need to carry more of the scoring load.

Defensively, the big challenge is slowing down Tatum. The guy is averaging 26.9 points a game and can take over whenever he wants. Then there’s Porzingis, who’s a constant threat because of his size and shooting. Wemby might have to step away from the rim more to guard him, but his length and defensive instincts could make life tough for KP.

The Spurs are still figuring things out this season, but this game is a golden opportunity. Beating the Celtics—especially on the road—would send a message that this team is for real.

With Wembanyama leading the way, they’ve got a shot. The Celtics missing Jrue Holiday and possibly Jaylen Brown? That opens the door. But it’s still gonna take a huge effort. And let’s be honest—everyone’s tuning in for Wemby vs. Tatum. If the Spurs’ young superstar shines under the bright lights, this might be the game where he truly cements himself as a franchise cornerstone.
