When Daryl Morey signed Paul George last summer to form the Big Three with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the expectation was to win a championship or at least turn into legitimate contenders right away. Instead of dominating, the Sixers have been plagued by injuries, watching their season unravel game by game. And as they prepare to take on the Raptors tonight, they’ll be doing so with little hope—simply because so many of their stars are still sidelined.
The biggest absence? Tyrese Maxey. He’s set to miss his fifth straight game due to a lower back sprain and a finger sprain. That’s a crushing blow for the Sixers, as Maxey has been their most consistent performer when healthy, putting up 26.3 points and over six assists per game. With him out, Philly’s already shaky season just got even tougher.
As per latest reports, Maxey has progressed to on-court activities. That means he could return soon. Unfortunately, his absence is just the tip of the iceberg for the Philly franchise. Obviously, Embiid (left knee injury management), Jared McCain (left knee surgery), and Eric Gordon (right wrist surgery), have all been shut down for the season after suffering major injuries.

Adding to the concerns, Paul George has also been ruled out for his fourth straight game as he continues to recover from left groin soreness. Turns out, he is scheduled to be reevaluated before Friday’s Pacers clash, which will hopefully help determine his timeline for return. Even the Raptors’ former franchise star Kyle Lowry will miss tonight’s reunion as he is dealing with a hip injury. Meanwhile, Andre Drummond (illness) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (ankle soreness) are questionable to suit up. Sure enough, this lengthy report leaves the Philly team in a very tough spot.

Sixers Depth Chart against Raptors as Injuries jeopardize Playoff Hopes
With multiple superstars out for the season, especially Embiid, the chances of the Sixers making the playoffs this year are bleak. As of now, they are ranked eleventh in the East, five wins behind the tenth seeded Bulls. So, they might not even qualify for the play-in tournament. Moreover, they might end up losing tonight’s game because of how shorthanded they are. Let’s take a look at their depth chart:
Position | Starters | 2nd | 3rd |
PG | Tyerse Maxey (O) | Jared Butler | Jeff Dowtin Jr. |
SG | Quentin Grimes | Lonnie Walker IV | Kyle Lowry (Q) |
SF | Kelly Oubre Jr. (Q) | Justin Edwards | Ricky Council IV |
PF | Paul George (O) | Adem Bona | Alex Reese |
C | Joel Embiid (O) | Guerschon Yabusele | Andre Drummond (Q) |

Well, Jared Butler is likely to remain Maxey’s replacement in the starting lineup until he returns. And he has been doing a decent job so far, averaging 7.9 points and four assists since joining the team. The rest of the lineup is also likely to remain the same as the last game if Oubre and Drummond do not return, as the Sixers do not have many options for change.
At this point, they are just trying to get through this season without any more injuries and begin preparation for next year with a healthy group. A forgettable campaign indeed.
