Can Joel Embiid's return ignite a 76ers resurgence, or will the Knicks spoil the party?

When the 76ers take the floor next, it’s not just going to be any regular game. It’s the NBA Cup opener, and the stage is set for something bigger than the usual season opener. It’s a ‘fresh start’ for Philly after a tough season so far with early struggles, leaving fans questioning the team’s potential. However, a key factor could change everything: their big man, Joel Embiid. Aside from the team’s challenges, the hoopster has yet to debut this season. The big question is: will he suit up today against the Knicks?

This season, Embiid has missed all 9 games because of his knee injury against the Golden State Warriors on January 30, and he also further served a 3-game suspension after getting into an argument and shoving columnist Marcus Hayes last week. But, here’s a positive update. The 76ers injury reports don’t include Embiid anymore, and he’s also done with his suspension. There’s also another positive update, as the former MVP was seen actively training! He stayed for an extra 15 minutes to partake in “extra shooting drills”.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Because Joel Embiid’s cleared to play, his presence on the court will undoubtedly be a game-changer! His ability to dominate offensively and defensively could give Philly a crucial edge against a tough Knicks squad. However, there was another trusted name who missed out on previous games. Is anyone still injured? Let’s explore their reports and depth chart.

76ers injury report and depth chart: Who will play in the NBA Cup Opener?

It was against the Clippers on Wednesday, that Tyrese Maxey strained his right hamstring and was “out” for all the following matchups. So, is he cleared for tonight? No, he is not. Maxey is the only player reported as injured in the Philly roster, and he will be re-evaluated in approximately one week. With this, let’s look into their potential lineup.

With no one injured in their Starters, the potential lineup looks clear. PG: Kyle Lowry, SG: Kelly Oubre Jr., SF: Paul George, PF: Caleb Martin, and C: Joel Embiid.

“Our medical is first and foremost,” HC Nick Nurse had said on opening night. “Joel is there, the front office, myself, everybody is weighing in. … We’re just trying to do something a little different and get him there (to the playoffs) this time.”

In summary, Joel Embiid’s likely return against the Knicks provides a tremendous boost for the 76ers. With him in the lineup, they’ll be looking to turn their season around and make a statement. And guess what, the former MVP is likely making his return in the first game of a back-to-back! It remains to be seen if the Philly side sticks to their plan of not exposing their talisman to consecutive games. After all, Paul Geoge, despite being around a bit more for the team, is struggling to find consistency after a preseason setback.

More than Joel Embiid’s return, the roster looking healthy, apart from Maxey, is a big-time advantage for Nick Nurse’s side. With their main star, can they rise to the challenge and secure a much-needed win? Do let us know your views in the comments below.
