As the Miami Heat face off against the Orlando Magic for their season opener, it also marks a special occasion. The 2024-25 is the 35th anniversary of the first game between the two Florida opponents. Their first meeting, November 28, 1989, saw Orlando 104-99. However, the Heat has historically been two steps ahead of its in-state rival, holding a significant 20-win advantage (79-59). Yet, this season, not many have faith in Jimmy Butler & Co. to make a strong impact in the Eastern Conference, especially considering how dominant the Magic has become behind Paolo Banchero.
As such, how does the Heat’s injury report look ahead of the season opener? Ira Winderman has the answer to that question. This report will be one that is sure to make Heat fans happy. Josh Richardson is the only player listed as ‘Out,’ due to left heel inflammation. Or if we are going for a medically accurate term, as Winderman opted for, “left heel; enthesopathy.”
But that wasn’t all. Per the 36-year veteran reporter, Josh Richardson, who reportedly was not at full practice due to a right big toe contusion, was also not on the injury report.

On the plus side, neither is Jimmy Butler! He will be on the court after resting for the team’s preseason finale. And with his comeback, chances are Jimmy will get his starting spot back from Haywood Highsmith. The Heat will be at full strength, whatever that may be, though. Why, you ask?
Simply because of the point mentioned above – the ‘Sunshine State’ isn’t really viewed as a threat. Particularly because of the lack of major offseason acquisitions following their first-round exit in the postseason. And, of course, there is that glaring issue of Butler’s contract. But that’s a topic for another day.
Anyway, let’s go into more details of the matchup.
Miami Heat vs Orlando Magic: Game day preview and key details
The Magic are coming into this season with plans to make their dream of being a contending team a reality. Sticking to continuity over the years has benefitted them greatly, bringing in extra hands only when needed and on the basis of their need. The Magic’s coach, Jamahl Mosley was thrilled that they are starting the season on the road.

“Being on the road to start the season is a great opportunity for these guys to continue to come together. … Their line of communication, their ability to pull for one another, and going into a different environment. I think that’s great for us to continue to grow and build,” he said.
There is no doubt that defense is their calling card, but the arrival of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a prized acquisition in the offseason, means that the Magic are also looking to make an impact offensively. But the Heat aren’t too far away themselves in that it will feature familiar faces.
But perhaps a key aspect to note is that the group of Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Terry Rozier, and Tyler Herro barely played together last season. Injuries were the reason for that. Watching how they mesh on the court will be key. The 35-year-old demands nothing but perfection from himself and everyone who plays with him. It’s an aspect that has often led to internal conflicts.

Then again, Butler did say that he was more focused on winning rather than a potential contract extension. With his eyes set on another deep playoff run, Butler’s leadership will be crucial in determining the Heat’s success this season, even as questions surrounding his future linger.
Anyway, the matchup is scheduled to tip off at Kaseya Center at 7:30 PM ET. Stay tuned!
