Will Brown and Tatum suit up tonight?
Jayson Tatum’s return on Friday proved to be pivotal, as he posted his 9th double-double of the season. Despite a grueling game against Milwaukee, there don’t seem to be any hints as to his absence vs. the Grizz. Furthermore, his ability to dominate on both ends of the court—averaging 28.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists—is expected to be critical in setting the tone tonight.

Kristaps Porzingis, however, missed the Bucks game because of injury management. But there’s a faint hope of the big man’s return in time to face Marcus Smart and Co. The Latvian 7-footer has been a revelation for the Celtics, averaging 21 points and nearly eight rebounds in the 4 games he played this season. We don’t have to tell you that Porzingis, when healthy, is a problem for opponents.
And if he does indeed suit up, Memphis better come to the floor with a Plan B! Or a C. Maybe even a D. Just in case, you know?
That said, Ja Morant & Co., are not easily dismissed. Particularly considering how they are faring this year as compared to last. And the potential return of Marcus Smart—Boston’s emotional leader for years—adds an exciting subplot. While the 30-year-old knows he will receive ovations and an overflow of love from ‘Beantown,’ Smart is acutely aware of what happens once the game tips off.
“I’m sure they see how good I’ve been playing, and they’re going to try to make sure I don’t come in there and have a great game. It’s a big test for us,” he told Damichael Cole of the Commercial Appeal. It seems Tatum has similar thoughts. Acknowledging that he would be thrilled to see Smart, the reigning champ did not wait too long before getting down to business.
“I played with him for six years and didn’t envision a time where I wouldn’t be on his team, so if [he] does play tomorrow, it’ll be a little weird. I’ll probably go out there and tackle the (expletive) out of him or something,” he said post-game.
Well, that’s well and good. But regardless of Marcus Smart’s presence, Desmond Bane seems intent on breaking a record held by Jayson Tatum. One that is exclusive to his team.
The star forward has never lost to the Grizzlies in his career! JT holds a flawless 13-0 record and Bane is not happy. “(Expletive) got to end,” he stated matter-of-fact to Cole. It’s also interesting to note here that the 26-year-old was selected as the 30th overall pick in 2020 by none other than the Celtics.
I will let you connect those dots, but Bane certainly does have the opportunity and the floor to make good on his word.
The Celtics depth chart vs. Grizzlies
Boston certainly boasts a deep and versatile lineup. Jrue Holiday takes charge as the starting point guard, with Payton Pritchard and Derrick White offering depth and flexibility. White, in particular, continues to play a crucial role across multiple positions. At the wings, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum remain Boston’s cornerstone players.

The reigning Finals MVP’s relentless two-way game pairs seamlessly with JT’s offensive brilliance. Meanwhile, the bench rotation of Al Horford and Sam Hauser ensures that the Cs’ forwards remain fresh and impactful throughout the game. Given KP is doubtful, Luke Kornet and Horford will no doubt have to step in.
POSITIONS | STARTERS | 2ND | 3RD |
PG | Jrue Holiday | Payton Pritchard | Derrick White |
SG | Derrick White | Payton Pritchard | Jaylen Brown |
SF | Jaylen Brown | Sam Hauser | Jayson Tatum |
PF | Jayson Tatum | Sam Hauser | Al Horford |
C | Kristaps Porzingis | Al Horford | Luke Kornet |
With Tatum and Brown firing on all cylinders, even with a glaring $25,000 hole in the latter’s wallet, and KP likely to return, Boston appears poised to handle business at home… However, the Grizzlies, fueled by the return of Marcus Smart and Desmond Bane’s determination to make a dent in JT’s flawless record, are not a team to underestimate.

Of course, there is also the part where they were the 13th seed last season with a 27-55 record. And now, they are at 4th with a 15-8 record—the same level as Dallas in the West and one up from the Knicks in the East!
Tonight’s matchup could turn into an emotional battle, but one thing’s for sure: it’ll be a game to remember.
