Jeff Bezos over LeBron James for Celtics ownership—Is this a smart move or a missed opportunity?

Boston Celtics now hold the record for the most titles won by a franchise. How did they come to this milestone? Well, it took them years to structure a Championship-level roster that can become a dynasty if they play their cards right. And that’s where the franchise is currently stuck. Yes, even after their 18th title, things aren’t fully merry in the Celtics front office. Now, the reason for this is the increasing taxes and salaries. The taxes are estimated to rise to $450 million and the ownership group planned to make the franchise available for sale.

On the bright side, as the rumors around Jeff Bezos owning the Boston side started to pick up the pace, the franchise can expect happy days in the future. However, amid these rumors, one of the Celtics rivals might just end up as a part-owner of the team. The Fenway Sports Group, which owns multiple sports franchises like MLB’s Red Sox, EPL’s Liverpool, etc. plans on entering the NBA, with Boston being their ticket. LeBron James, the 4x champion, happens to own a 1% stake in the Group and could end up as part owner of the Jays in the future.

However, Bezos seems to be more favored over King James and the Fenway Sports Group. But why is that? Well, SI’s Chris Mannix reported, “Celtics should — and undoubtedly would — welcome a Jeff Bezos bid. Deep pockets (for luxury tax paying purposes), new arena (Bezos isn’t paying rent for long). The NBA would love to have Bezos as part of its ownership group, too.”

Deep pockets: Out of all the pointers, the fact that the franchise won’t need to worry much about the luxury taxes under Jeff Bezos has to be a priority. The Celtics are a second-apron team. They signed Jayson Tatum in what turned out to be the biggest deal in NBA history. JT signed a 5-year $314 million contract. Nevertheless, names like Brown, White, and Holiday will be eligible for such contracts too. Of course, players’ salaries in Boston will be something to look forward to if Bezos becomes the owner of the franchise.

New home: The Cs signed a 15-year lease to play in the TD Garden, till 2036. At the end of the day, Jeff Bezos will have to look out for luxury taxes and players’ salaries and find some balance. And it is safe to say that the billionaire won’t be paying millions in leases for years. Surprisingly, this opens an opportunity for a new home arena with a new vision! And lastly, it’s about time that Bezos makes his appearance in the NBA world.

Jeff Bezos wasn’t interested in buying an NBA franchise two years ago

Have an interesting take?

Back in 2022, Jeff Bezos was in the talks of stepping in to buy the Phoenix Suns. The franchise was valued at $1.8 billion at the time. However, this time around, going with the Celtics, Bezos will be looking to spend anywhere around $6 billion at max. According to Forbes, the Boston side is valued at $4.7 billion. Nevertheless, this will be a big sale, but for someone worth $196 billion, do we need to worry much? This will also reflect on the NBA’s diverse group of owners, as one of the most renowned businessmen on the planet joins the table.

Moreover, it will be interesting to see the Celtics rock the Amazon logo on their green jerseys. Like the Warriors, the Celtics can also become the most valued franchise in the league, but then again, that will come with the increasingly heavy cost of expensive luxury taxes. As of now, there are high chances that the billionaire is cleared as the next owner of the Celtics and it will be interesting to see when the possibility becomes reality.

However, Wyc Grousbeck, the current governor, expects to be in control until the franchise is fully sold in 4 years. “The expectation is to sell the time in two parts with 51% going fairly soon, 49% then closing in second closing. That’s the expectation in 2028…We’re going to hire bankers and advisers. This is going to be quite the bidding process.”

What are your thoughts on Jeff Bezos looking to own the 78-year-old franchise? Do you think the Boston Celtics will get a new arena for themselves? Let us know in the comments.
