Can Luka Doncic carry the Mavs alone, or is Kyrie's absence too big a hurdle?

Not the start Dallas expected. Well, the reigning West champs have lost 3 consecutive games and are 5-6 to start the season. Sure, all three games were decided by a very close margin, three or fewer points. But they were losses nevertheless. And the Mavs will be looking to turn things around tonight as they face the struggling Jazz. However, things are not looking in their favor as the latest update on Kyrie Irving’s health adds to their injury concerns and tensions.

As per the latest report, Uncle Drew has been ruled out due to a right shoulder strain. That’s a massive blow as Kai has been in elite form so far, averaging 25.2 points and nearly five assists. Even during the team’s ongoing losing streak, the hoopster did not miss a beat and has averaged 31 points. Surely, his absence will leave a massive void in Jason Kidd’s offense.

Moreover, they will also have to play without P.J. Washington. Well, the 6’7 star has not played in the last four games due to a right knee sprain. And there is still no timeline for his return. Before the injury sidelined him, he was averaging 9.4 points and nearly eight boards. So, it is understandable why they’ve been struggling without him.

Meanwhile, Dante Exum continues to remain out as he is still recovering from a right wrist surgery. And he is yet to make an appearance this season. Amid the unavailability of multiple key players, the Mavs have one ray of hope.

Luka Doncic’s availability boosts hope as Jason Kidd gives crucial Kyrie Irving update

Fortunately, one positive update on the injury report is that Luka Doncic will play tonight despite dealing with a right knee contusion. Initially listed as ‘day-to-day’, though, his team needs to be cautious with his health, as losing another vital star to injury could jeopardize their season. Yes, the Slovenian has been playing great so far, averaging 28.5 points. But he is also logging in heavy minutes (37.9 minutes per game) trying to keep his team afloat. Well, the season is long and that could take a toll on him.

Moreover, the hoopster needs to be available when Kyrie Irving returns to action. And Jason Kidd is optimistic that it could be sooner than expected, “I’m not concerned. Hopefully he’s back soon.” Sure enough, the lethal duo led the Mavs to the NBA Finals last year and they are hoping to get over the hump and win it all this time, after more than a decade.

Of course, that would require both Dallas stars to remain healthy and available. But first, their primary focus would be to break their losing streak tonight, by getting a win in Utah, who have only won two games so far. Do you think Luka Doncic and Co. can do it?
