When Stephen Curry was young, his mother Sonya Curry was very hard on him. And that eventually made him an obedient listener. Curry’s mother recently revealed that she was so strict with Steph that his friends were afraid of her.
Sonya Curry’s path from poor beginnings in Radford, Virginia, to becoming the head of one of basketball’s most illustrious families is one of triumph over hardship. However, life was not simple for the Curry family. Sonya experienced discrimination and bias firsthand during a time when racism was still common in Virginia. She resorted to athletics as an outlet to cope with her difficulties, seeking to find peace and a feeling of connection. Due to all the challenges she faced, Sonya wanted to protect her children by acting tough.

Sonya has three children – two sons and one daughter. While Stephen and Seth have excelled in the sport of basketball, Sydel is a professional volleyball player. Sydel in her teenage years had a big fight with Sonya for grounding her. Sydel was so furious with her mother that she said, “You are the worst mother in the world.”
Sonya was deeply hurt by that rant but knew that she was doing the best for her kids. She recently opened up about her kid’s upbringing by starring on a podcast called, “Got it from my Momma”.
She said, “Some of my kid’s friends in high school were like, ‘Your mom is tough’. I’m like, why is everybody afraid of me? I don’t get it, I am really nice and approachable. I was very intentional about it every day and wanted my children to understand how important they were to me.”
Sonya was invited on the podcast to talk about her book, “Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose.”
