Former NBA first-round draft pick of the Rockets, AJ Griffin, has decided to retire from the league after just two years. With career averages of over 7 points and 1 rebound, many might assume his departure was due to performance, but Griffin’s decision was rooted in something much deeper—his faith. He explained that he quit basketball to fully commit to his spiritual journey.
“I gave up basketball to follow Jesus, and I know that in a lot of people’s eyes…it seems like a loss in lot of people’s eyes but I just wanna let you guys know that I am so excited,” Griffin shared. Although drafted by the Rockets, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, where he had a promising rookie season, playing 70 games. However, his second season was cut short, playing only 20 games due to an ankle sprain in his lower right leg.
Griffin’s decision to retire was driven by his desire to dedicate his time and energy to God. He believes stepping away from the sport allows him to focus on his faith. When he says, “letting go of basketball means… God’s a full-time issue,” Griffin expresses how his spiritual journey now takes priority, and he views this choice as fulfilling and positive.
Reflecting on his spiritual awakening, Griffin shared that it began in 2020 when he gave his life to Christ. While he chose to accept Christ back then, he feels it was God who truly found him and guided him onto this path.
