From video coordinator to head coach: Brain Keefe’s inspiring NBA journey
NBA is a dream that many cannot achieve or leave in the middle. Brian Keefe may sound just like that. His journey in the NBA started not as a player or assistant coach but as a video coordinator with the San Antonio Spurs. In 2007, his real story began when Sam Presti and PJ Carlesimo recruited him to help build the Thunder from the ground up. When he joined, they were still the Seattle SuperSonics. So now you know how he’s been shaping legends since the beginning. Keefe grew into a vital piece of the Thunder’s success. In 2010, he was promoted to be the defensive coordinator, and after seven successful years in Oklahoma City, he then moved on to the New York Knicks in 2014. There, he worked closely with rookie Kristaps Porziņģis, focusing on defense and player development.
In 2016, he took on another challenge, joining the Western Conference’s legend Los Angeles Lakers. Who knew that he would turn around the Lakers? Under his guidance, they jumped to 12th from 30th, proving his defensive prowess once again. However, it wasn’t just about numbers; it was about his ability to shape both players personally and as a team. Just like he turned Brandon Ingram into a stronger, more focused version of themselves.

However, his legacy didn’t just stop there. He returned to OKC in 2019 and shaped Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Well, in 2021, he joined the Brooklyn Nets, continuing his defensive work. However, after parting ways with the Nets in 2023, a new chapter awaited. No one would have guessed that this chapter would make him a head coach. Yes, he joined the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach in July 2023, and by January 2024, after Wes Unseld Jr. was reassigned, he was named interim head coach. Something that nobody saw coming!
Now, as he got his hands on the struggling Wizards team, Keefe faces a tough task. Despite his legendary experience, the team is currently at the bottom of the standings. But with his track record of developing players and improving defenses, the real question is: How long will it take for Keefe’s leadership to bring the Wizards back into contention?
