It was a new vibe in the Lakers training camp this year. Sure, there was the never-before-seen dynamic of LeBron James sharing the court with his son Bronny. And also, the usual excitement of being just days away from tip-off. However, the vibe we are referring to was created by a surprise DJ, who took over the training facility with his vibrant music while the Lakers stars prepared for the upcoming season. “It (the idea) came from LeBron.” JJ Redick revealed.

Surely, many of you would be wondering who the DJ is and how he caught LBJ’s attention for the gig at the Lakers training camp. As it turns out, the artist was none other than LeBron’s old pal Jameel Davis a.k.a. DJ Meel. Born and raised in Cleveland, Meel got into DJing fourteen years ago. However, that was never his first career choice, “Even though I have always had a passion for music, I didn’t see this as the route. I knew I wanted to be behind the scenes and I saw myself being a A&R (something I still want to do) or producing.”

However, it was former NFL star Troy Smith who gave him his first push into his current career. “Meel you wanna get into DJing?” Smith asked Jameel, and bought him all the required equipment to kickstart his DJing business. “I’ve just been consistently at it ever since.” Meel said in an interview. Hailing from Cleveland, Meel also shared a great relationship with LeBron and he has been friends with the The Kid from Akron for over twenty years. And the same year LBJ joined the Lakers, Meel also moved to LA for better career opportunities. Sure enough, the risk paid off big time.

Well, DJ Meel’s career has taken off since he moved to LA. Working with well renowned brands including Nike, Sprite, Amazon Music and many more, he is one of the most successful DJs in the nation. Moreover, he frequently controls the music at LeBron and his wife Savannah’s birthday and anniversary parties. Sure enough, their bond is so strong that the couple has even promoted Meel’s work on social media multiple times. While LBJ called him “one of a kind” Savannah also had high praise for the DJ, “When I hear the name DJ Meel, I’m already thinking, where’s the party? And what am I wearing? I’m pretty sure one of the best parties I’ve ever been to, he was DJ. I love having him at our party because it’s a guaranteed vibe.”

Not only the James family, but Meel has also played at parties for other NBA superstars including Anthony Davis. Surely, his ties with these stars were a big reason why the Lakers called him to play at the training camp. Moreover, Meel has previously been a DJ outside The Staples Center for select Lakers games. So, him setting a musical vibe at their training camp should not come as a big surprise.

More importantly, LeBron’s unique idea of calling DJ Meel even garnered praise from his teammates and head coach. “I liked the vibe.” JJ Redick remarked while Austin Reaves said, “It just brings good vibes. You’re having a good time but working hard at the same time.” And you might continue to see Jameel at more such high-profile events as he has huge career aspirations, which he revealed in an interview four years ago, “Really to keep DJing and progressing at that, as well as really locking in and doing more Music Supervision. My dream is to do movies, television shows, video games and whatever else I can get my hands on. One day I would like to start my own company doing all of this and putting together a team that can handle all music sync needs.”
