Svetislav Pesic says 2024 Team USA tops Jordan's Dream Team—Is he out of his mind?

When Serbia won the silver medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, their coach, Svetislav Pešić just outrightly proclaimed himself to be the best coach in the continent. With an old-school and archaic approach to coaching players, Pesic is truly regarded as a prolific coach with a career spanning several decades. Born on August 28, 1949, Pesic has had a profound impact on not just European basketball but a global impact.

He began his career as a player with the Bosna Sarajevo, where he won the FIBA European Champions Cup in 1979. But it was actually his transition to coaching that defined his legacy. He successfully led the Yugoslavian team to win gold at the 2001 EuroBasket and the 2002 FIBA World Championship. With these wins, he established himself as the top coach in Europe.

And his list of accolades doesn’t just end with this. His impact on club basketball, coaching FC Barcelona, and then winning a EuroLeague title with them in 2003 cannot be ignored. His tactical acumen and his obsession with discipline are what sets him apart in a world that’s too imperfect right now.

He has a natural ability that makes him a respectable figure in the basketball community. So when he says that the 2024 Dream Team is better than Michael Jordan’s Dream Team, people will take him seriously.

The 2024 Team USA and the Dream Team Comparison

A month ago, the Serbian coach compared the current USA men’s basketball team with the 1992 Michael Jordan-led Dream Team. He feels this year’s Dream Team 2.0 is far superior. “This American team is better than the original Dream Team from 1992”.

As the Head Coach for Germany, he had the opportunity to face the older Dream Team. And like every other team back then, his team too was tackled (111-68). Such was the terror of Michael Jordan. Yet, he has doubts that LeBron James, Steph Curry, and other stars can take the cake away this year. “I was there with the German team and then we thought there were no better players than these”.
“This team that will appear in Paris will be stronger than the Dream Team, with the fact that not everyone will prepare just for them like not everyone was prepared just for the Dream Team in 1992″.

So, how does he plan to tackle the Dream Team 2.0? His goal is clear. Focus on your game first, rather than being concerned about the enemy. “We’re not issuing a threat. We have no right to threaten (anybody) now, we’re aware of who we’re playing against,” said Pesic.

The Team USA roster has been headlined by some of the best names, including King James, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum and more. They’ve dominated the world so far, with only a few more steps left to get the prize home. As a combined total, the Team USA 2024 roster has 14 NBA titles, 8 NBA MVP awards and 7 Finals MVP award winners. Truly something that would make anyone dread them.
