“I say really, just no expectations. I feel like just coming in and doing what I can do in whatever time I’m giving”. This is what Rob Dillingham said on the NBA media day. This rookie from Hickory, North Carolina, dribbling a basketball on the pavement outside his home, had dreamt of the NBA.

Born on January 4, 2005, Dillingham has turned those dreams into reality. Signed with Minnesota on July 8, 2024, Dillingham is ready to prove himself on the biggest stage. Recently, in his preseason opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, Dillingham displayed flashes of brilliance, contributing 20 points to a decisive 124-107 victory. Alongside teammates like Josh Minott and Luka Garza, he thrived in an environment filled with talent.

However, while his offensive potential was evident, he faced challenges, especially with finishing at the rim. As the season unfolds, addressing these areas will be crucial for his development. With guidance and consistent practice, he could refine his skills and make an even bigger impact. But how did he go from a small-town kid to one of the most talked-about rookies in the league?

From Hickory to the court

Rob was born in a diverse household, to Donald Dillingham and Valaaulia “Lia” Tailele. His mother is of Samoan descent. When asked about how he could serve as a role model for the community? He said,” My mom she’s Samoan i know we got a big family so a lot of Samoans they just all about family so it’s just a blessing to even be able to model for a lot of people of that descent, and our descent just I feel like it’s a blessing for sure so really just helping them is great”.

He has always been a top player; he played at Combine Academy, where he became one of the top players in his class. Can you imagine the pressure he faced? As a sophomore, he averaged an impressive 21.2 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game. He led his team to a 29-3 record and earned the Charlotte Observer Player of the Year title. How do you think he felt, knowing all eyes were on him?

His journey took a significant turn when he transferred to Donda Academy, Kanye West’s school, for his junior year, followed by a move to Overtime Elite for his senior year. What motivated him to make such bold decisions? Overtime Elite is a professional basketball league tailored for late high school and early college-level players. He joined the Overtime Cold Hearts, one of the league’s six teams. Dillingham made his OTE debut on November 11, scoring six points, grabbing three rebounds, and recording three steals in a 92-84 loss to the YNG Dreamerz. This opportunity enabled him to compete at a high level and further hone his skills before transitioning to college basketball.

With talent like his, it’s no wonder Dillingham was a five-star recruit. He caught the attention of top programs across the country. Initially committed to NC State, he later reopened his recruitment, ultimately choosing the University of Kentucky. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to have so many options? After Dennis Simth Jr. he became the second highest-ranked recruit in the program’s history. At Kentucky, he averaged 15.2 points per game, showcasing his scoring and playmaking skills.

Following his impressive season, he declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. On June 26, 2024, he was selected as the eighth overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs and subsequently traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a protected first-round pick swap in 2030 and an unprotected first-round pick in 2031.

As the Timberwolves look to build on their preseason success, what role will Dillingham assume? His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and create opportunities for his teammates makes him an exciting prospect. As he settled into his new role, he stated, “I’m just trying to learn from everybody—coaches, teammates—and be the best positive player I can be. I’m focused on learning every day and taking it one day at a time, trying to fit into the team.” This underscores his commitment to continuous learning and adapting to his new environment.
