One of the important trades that went almost unnoticed this offseason was the Mavs’ Quentin Grimes trade. The fourth-year guard, who has an impressive three and D assets in his arsenal, is literally a steal for the Texas side. With Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving already hailed as the greatest backcourt duos after Splash Bros, the Mavericks seemed to further have deepened their backcourt for the upcoming season. While the team looks to run it back once again, let’s find out how Quentin Grimes makes the difference.
2000-born Texas native played for the University of Kansas in his freshman year, averaging 8.4 ppg in 36 appearances. Following that, Grimes moved to the University of Houston for his sophomore year and represented the Cougars for two years. The 6 ‘6 guard had his breakout season in his junior year, averaging 17.8 ppg, and immediately declared for the 2021 NBA Draft.
The LA Clippers selected Quentin Grimes with their 25th overall pick and immediately drafted him to the New York Knicks. In his rookie season, he put up a decent show averaging 6.1 ppg with his 17-odd minute appearance per game. And, without any delay, Grimes found himself a spot in the rotation in the very season, playing 30-odd minutes, averaging 11.3 ppg. Importantly, in the same season, the shooting guard recorded a prolific stat from the arc with 38.6% 3-pt FG.

Moreover, it’s the defensive game that gives Grimes an edge over other shooting guards in the league. The well-built physique allows the guard to dynamic player on the defensive floor, with the ability to guard a big man even during switches. Surprisingly, the Knicks threw it all away in his third year when they traded him to the Pistons ahead of the trade deadline. Not to blame the NY side, as they acquired a postseason-dominant Bojan Bogdonavich in return. And, in the 2024 offseason, the Mavs cashed in big time.
How will Quentin Grimes impact the Mavs?
Grimes, who is the fourth year of his rookie contract, definitely came into the Mavs side, undervalued. The Mavs traded their veteran shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and two second-round picks to rope in Grimes. It’s truly a steal for the Mavs. Let’s find out how. The shooting guard, who can also play the role of small forward, can come in the second unit rotation, ensure more space for Kyrie and Luka. Moreover, he can also make the odd three-pointers once in a while.
Above all, Grime seems to be raring to go into the season, as he said, “It’s been great man. Energy been high every single day. Everybody getting up and down the floor,” when asked about his training at the Mavs fold. And, he also gave a shout to the Mavs’ back-up center, Derick Lively II, for his service to the side.

Apart from Grimes, the team also has an up-and-coming shooting Jazian Gortman, who is yet to seal the deal in the 15-man roster.
