Personally and professionally, it was time for Killian Tillie to say I do. While the former NBA player tied the knot with the love of his life, there was good news elsewhere as well. Basketball finally returned to life with his first pro contract in 2 years. But who exactly is he, and why are we discussing him? That’s because of the bold professional choice he made by ignoring a return to the NBA.

But who exactly is Killian Tillie? Those with a strong memory will remember him from that poster on Jalen Smith from December 28, 2021, that sent the Grizzlies bench into a frenzy. Yes, that’s where he played in his brief stint in the biggest hoops league, and that was about it for the NBA highlight reel of the 26-year-old.

Killian Tillie: Early life, personal milestones, and breaking into the NBA

The journey began in the suburbs of France in 2004 when he was only 6. Born into a family of volleyball players to father Laurent and mother Caroline Keulen, volleyball became a part of a young Killian’s life. He ultimately chose basketball and enrolled in the youth program of Cagnes Basket. His brothers, Kim and Kevin, share athletic genes too, as the former took up the same profession as Killian and the latter followed in their parent’s footsteps. Laurent is now a volleyball coach in Japan, after his Gold medal success with France in the Tokyo Olympics.

Killian didn’t get the privilege of representing France on the Olympic stage but donned the blue stripes in the age-based FIBA competitions. In the 2014 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, the 6’9″ center won the MVP award.

By 2016, it was time for the hooper’s college decision, and he joined the Gonzaga Bulldogs. He made a name for himself by averaging a smidgen under 13 points, 6 rebounds alongside 1.7 assists in 36 games, as a sophomore. However, the following years were injury-riddled as the young gun underwent knee surgery.

Killian was undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft before being signed by the Memphis franchise on a two-way contract. That was followed by another two-way deal before he ultimately got a two-year contract in 2022. Unfortunately for him, injuries became a major issue as he was waived in October of the same year.

During this tough time, Killian found Hailee, a volleyball player who formerly played for the North Idaho Cardinals. Their mutual interest in volleyball worked a charm, as they’re now a married couple after Killian proposed to Hailee on July 12, 2023!

His 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in his 36 NBA outings were forgettable for sure, but after regaining full fitness, the Celtics came calling. And that’s where he was given a second chance in the NBA. However, here’s when the twist arrives.

Killian Tillie decided against NBA return despite strong interest from multiple franchises

Tillie was surprisingly picked up by the Celtics for their Summer League outing in 2024. “I haven’t played in two years. Just excited to get back to it. I’m feeling healthy now,” the French hooper had said in May. The French C averaged 8.4 points and 3.8 rebounds in five games, making a case for himself as a role player.

Interest in him picked up after that, with the Warriors being one of the sides keen on inking a deal with him. The Dubs were in a chase for Lauri Markkanen throughout the offseason before the Utah star decided to stay put by signing a new contract.

That led the Bay Area side to Tillie, who would’ve added depth in both the center and forward options. According to Spokesman-Review, alongside the Dubs, there was interest from the Sixers as well. Tillie would’ve served as a backup to Joel Embiid, but he ultimately chose to ply his trade in Spain with Unicaja Malaga of Liga Endesa. Will there be a change in the tide for Tillie? Thoughts!
