Born in Melbourne, Australia on December 7, 2004, Johnny Furphy is a gifted basketball player with a diverse athletic experience. Furphy grew up in a family of athletes. His parents, Richard Furphy and Liza Alpers, both enjoyed successful athletic careers. Liza was a national-level diver, and Richard was a professional Australian football player. Johnny also has two older siblings; Joe, who just inked a professional Australian football deal, and Holly, a sophomore soccer player at Santa Clara.

Johnny received a sports scholarship at Maribyrnong Sports Academy and attended Maribyrnong College. He showcased his versatile athletic abilities by playing cricket and Australian football throughout high school. Even though he initially planned to pursue football, basketball soon took over his ambitions.

Furphy’s basketball career started to take form in 2021 when he participated in two Big V league games for the Hawthorn Magic, a basketball club. He was a regular selection for the State Development Program and the Southern Cross Challenge squads. Johnny then qualified for his first state team in 2022 at the Under 20 National Championships in Mackay as a member of the second team.

Furphy’s potential attracted the attention of McKinlay, the head coach of the BA Centre of Excellence (CoE), who took him to Canberra in 2022. Furphy participated in three NBL1 games at the CoE. In 2023, he averaged 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds over 12 NBL1 games.

College career & draft prospects

Furphy committed to playing for the Kansas Jayhawks in 2023. He made a name for himself as a vital reserve wing in his freshman year. In January this year, he kickstarted his college career, scoring seven points in a 78-66 victory over the ninth-ranked Oklahoma squad. Furphy earned a position on the Big 12 Conference All-Freshman team by the end of the regular season.

After an impressive freshman season, he declared for the 2024 Draft and promptly received a green room invite; a sign of high draft expectations. At the NBA Draft Combine, Furphy measured 6′ 7.50” barefoot, with an 8′ 8.50” standing reach, 188.8 lbs weight, 6′ 8.00” wingspan, 25.5-inch standing vertical, and a 32-inch max vertical.

Despite ESPN’s projections, the first round of the draft came and went without his name being called. Analysts also reported interest from teams such as Memphis at #9 and Cleveland at #20, but Furphy remains undrafted, making him a potential steal in the second round.
