The handicapped New York Knicks entered the game Monday night as underdogs. Despite the Houston side leading by 14 points at halftime, the Knicks mounted a fierce comeback, outscoring their opponents by 11 points in the third quarter. And just when they were on the verge of pushing the game into overtime, ref Jacyn Goble whistled a foul with less than a second remaining.

With the game tied at 103 and eight seconds remaining, Knicks’ Precious Achiuwa blocked a short shot by Jalen Green. Rockets’ Aaron Holiday grabbed the rejected ball beyond the arc and attempted to throw up a one-handed desperation 40-foot heave.

As he did so, Jalen Brunson tried to contest the shot and appeared to make minimal contact. Although the hurried shot was never going to go in, ref Goble still called Brunson for a foul.

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first instance of him making an incorrect foul call. Remember LeBron James on his knees last season, trying to come to terms with no foul? Yes, that was the same referee, and that was another erroneous judgment on Goble’s part.

Last season, the Lakers were up against the Celtics; the game was tied at 105-105 with only 4.1 seconds to go. James was about to attempt a left-handed layup when he appeared to get smacked on the arm by the Boston Celtics’ star Jayson Tatum.

While Tatum clearly made contact with James’ shooting arm, no foul was called, and therefore, the game went to overtime. If a foul was called, it would mean a free throw for James. But the Celtics ended up winning the game in overtime with a final scoreline of 125-121.

The NBA later announced that it was indeed a foul. Crew chief Eric Lewis told the reporter, “There was contact. At the time, during the game, we did not see a foul. The crew missed the play.” The outcome wasn’t any different this time.

The officials acknowledge their mistake

As a result of the foul call, Holiday was sent to the free-throw line. He made his first two throws and missed the third one intentionally to run out the clock. Consequently, the Rockets improved their season record to 24-29 with a 105-103 victory over the Knicks.

After the game, crew chief Ed Molly acknowledged that a foul shouldn’t have been called. He admitted, “After seeing it during postgame review, the offensive player was able to return to a normal playing position on the floor. The contact which occurred after the release of the ball, therefore is incidental and marginal to the shot attempt and should not have been called.”
