Born in Australia on March 17, 2003, Dyson grew up in Bendigo, Victoria, along with his two siblings. He inherited his love for basketball from his father, Ricky Daniels, who is originally from the US and used to play college basketball at NC State. Then he moved to Australia to play professionally with the Bendigo Braves, a NBL1 South Club based in Victoria. Ricky Dyson’s legendary career with the Braves earned him two South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) MVP awards and a retired jersey. It was this glorious legacy that inspired Dyson to build a career in basketball, too.
But, it’s not just Dyson. The game seems to run in the family. His older brother, Kai, plays at Regis University, while his younger brother, Dash, is following in Dyson’s footsteps at the NBA Global Academy in Canberra and is one of the top international prospects in 2026 NBA Draft. The young players are blessed with supportive parents who ensure to show up at all their games, too.
And, that pretty much sums up the common public knowledge about Dyson’s personal life. However, that’s not the only fascinating thing about the young players. His journey making it to the NBA world is worth knowing just as much.
Dyson’s NBA Journey: A story of record-breaking feats
When Dyson was seven, he started playing both basketball and football together. He went on to represent his home state of Victoria at various national basketball and football championships as well. But, to focus solely on basketball, he later gave up his football ambitions and joined the NBA Global Academy, eventually getting signed by the Bendigo Braves.

Dyson Daniels’ professional career took off when he joined NBA G League Ignite in 2021, opting to skip college and the NBL’s Next Stars program. In the G League, he impressed with averages of 12 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and two steals per game, even earning a spot in the 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend’s Rising Stars Challenge. Daniels declared for the 2022 NBA Draft and was selected 8th overall by the New Orleans Pelicans.
Now Daniels, aged 21, has already made history in his professional career. Leading the steals for the 2024-25 season, Daniels is averaging an impressive 3.2 steals per game. If he maintains this pace, he is projected to break the all-time single-season steals record of 212, set by Mookie Blaylock in the 1990s. In just 24 games, Daniels has already amassed 73 steals, putting him on track for an unprecedented 260 by season’s end. In his game against the Detroit Pistons, Daniels set a career-high record of seven steals in a game and became the first player since Michael Jordan in 1989 to record 15-plus points and five-plus steals in four consecutive games.

Additionally, his deflections are on another level with over 148 through 24 games. He is averaging 6.5 deflections per game, on the way to breaking the record for deflections in a season. The current NBA record is 315 deflections held by Robert Covington made during the 2017-18 season, and Dyson is on pace to have over 600 deflections this season. With this pace in steals and deflections, Daniels is on the verge of breaking records that have stood for decades.
These impressive stats not only place him among the league’s defensive elite but also highlight his potential to leave a lasting legacy in NBA history.
