The name is Daniel Lurie, does it ring a bell? For the people of the Bay Area, it must be pretty simple. But for the NBA world, people have to think a little harder. Okay, okay, take a breather. Let me give you a hint. You must have heard about NBA legend Charles Barkley‘s long-standing beef with the city of San Francisco, right? So, Lurie has taken the impossible job of changing Chuck’s perspective toward the city as he is all set to visit the city for the All-Star weekend.
You may ask me, why would Lurie take up this tough job? If not for him, then who else would? It’s because he is the current mayor of San Francisco. Moreover, the NBA legend’s attack on the city wasn’t a humorous affair, as Barkley recently called the city a “rat-infested” place and also questioned the city’s hygiene and crime rates. In short, the San Francisco Mayor has a huge task in his hand and he sounded pretty prepared. Before we go into the details of his preparations, let’s get to know more about the Mayor himself.

Who is San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie? What is his ethnicity?
Daniel Lurie, the 48-year-old man of the Democratic party, is the new Mayor of the Bay Area. After winning the elections last year, he assumed the office in January 2025 after ruling out defeated incumbent Mayor London Breed. Lurie has had a long journey before reaching this spot. And the future looks bright for him being a sports fan, looking at the number of major sporting events lining up to hit the city.
After completing his Master’s in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley in 2005, he began his journey in charitable works. He founded the Tipping Point Community, an anti-poverty non-profit organization, aimed at eradicating various forms of poverty. For instance, in 2018, Lurie committed himself to raising $100 million to eradicate chronic homelessness in San Francisco via Tipping Point. However, in 2019, he stepped down as the CEO of the committee and continued in service from the board.
Well, it was the start of something new. Four years later, in 2023, Daniel Lurie announced his candidacy for mayor of SF for the 2024 election. After receiving promising support from popular investors, Lurie managed to reach where he is standing right now.
Now that we know briefly about his journey, let’s take a look at his ethnicity. He is a Jewish, born and raised in San Francisco by Mimi (née Ruchwarger) and Rabbi Brian Lurie. So, it makes him an American. Notably, Lurie’s parents were separated when he was two years old.
Who is mayor Daniel Lurie married to?
Daniel Lurie is married to Becca Prowda. To be honest, it’s a match made in heaven. Lurie, the current Mayor of SF, is fairly new to the political world. On the other hand, Prowda has built her career as a political insider. Currently, she is the chief of protocol in the office of Sacramento’s Governor, Gavin Newsom. Notably, she served as an aide to Newsom during his stint as SF Mayor. So, the point is Lurie couldn’t have asked for a better life partner who knows how to run the show.
Moreover, the couple also has another interesting story. It’s the story of how they met. We got to know how Daniel was interested in charity work all his life. And that very thing became the main driving force in their love story. During her college, Prowda actively looked for opportunities in service work. And that’s when she reached the Robinhood Foundation and she met Lurie. Speaking of it to the SF Chronicle, she recounted, “We connected instantly.” Then, the rest is history.

What precautions have been implemented by mayor Daniele Lurie for the All-Star weekend in San Francisco?
It’s not just about the upcoming All-Star weekend. San Francisco has a series of big sporting events ganging up over the next two years. So, even if Charles Barkley didn’t criticize the city’s safety and hygiene, Daniel Lurie is liable to keep the city prepared for anything. Addressing the public on CBS News, he said, “You’re going to be safe and secure in San Francisco.”
Moreover, addressing the upcoming events, Super Bowl LX in February 2026 & FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026, he said, “We get to show off to the world what we all know — when we’re at our best, we are the greatest city in the world.” Above all, coming back to the Charles Barkley affair, Lurie offered to take Chuck for a ride around the city and also sought Steph Curry‘s help with his van.

Reacting to the invite, Curry said, “I don’t know if they trust me as the driver. But a sprinter van, take him on a ferryboat. Yeah, we got to get Chuck out of the scene and there’s some good food out here, too. He’ll appreciate that.” Anyway, on a serious note, considering the All-Star weekend, Lurie decided to strengthen the security on the weekends. Speaking of which, he added, “Everyone’s on standby. [The California Highway Patrol] has offered support if we need it, but right now, we feel like we have things under control. We’re always ready and willing to call our partners, whether it’s state or federal officials.”
Now that the Mayor has given his word for the safety of the city, let’s begin the celebration for the exciting weekend ahead!
