Fans are not happy about a random player trash-talking a legend. Yes, we’re talking about what transpired between Kevin Durant and young Cam Spencer. The news spread like wildfire, with fans asking one of two questions.

“Who the hell does Cam Spencer think he is?” or “Who is Cam Spencer?” So, today, we’ll try to answer the latter question so you can find the answers to the former question yourself! Let’s start with what happened during the Suns-Grizzlies game.

What happened between Kevin Durant and Cam Spencer?

“Not good for TV,” is what Cam Spencer told us when asked about what he said to Kevin Durant during the Grizzlies-Suns game. The two got into a scuffle after Spencer chirped at Durant after sinking a 3-pointer with a second left in the third quarter.

Not one to let disrespect like that slide, KD shot right back with some choice words of his. Soon, Desmond Bane came to back up his rookie, but Durant refused to entertain either player, shoving Bane as tempers continued to flare. However, the end of the quarter meant this beef fizzled out before things got too out of hand.

“You come to Memphis, you gotta match their energy if you wanna stay in the game,” said the 2x NBA champion when asked about the incident with Spencer.

Both KD and Cam ended up receiving technicals for their actions. And we can say they were fully deserved. Now that we’ve established the facts of their scrap, we can get to answering some other questions about Cam. Namely…

Who is Cam Spencer? Is he the brother of Warriors star Pat Spencer?

Cam plays as a shooting guard for the Memphis Grizzlies. He’s on a two-way contract with Memphis and also plays for their G-League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle. But most G-League players don’t get to share the court with someone like Kevin Durant, so why did Spencer? Well, he put up a staggering 51 points for the Hustle in December last year. And that was enough to earn him some playing time in the top flight.

But that’s to be expected from someone of Spencer’s pedigree. After all, his older brother is the Golden State Warriors’ Pat Spencer. And as the brother of someone who shares a roster with Steph Curry, we shouldn’t be surprised at Cam’s talent. But what about his background? How did Cam get to the NBA? Let’s have a look.

Where is Cam Spencer from? Which college did he attend?

Cam may play for the Memphis Grizzlies, but his heart lies in the town of Davidsonville, Maryland. He didn’t spend his childhood there, though. Spencer received his primary education in the capital city of Baltimore at the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland. Here, Cam was already showing glimpses of his insane potential. Even as a senior, he was averaging 25 points and 7 boards!

His heroics in Baltimore were enough to impress the Loyola Greyhounds scouts. In 2019, he committed to playing for them, but things wouldn’t exactly go his way there. Cam played 23 games for the Greyhounds before a hip injury nearly ended his season. However, tenacious as he is, Cam managed to bounce back and return for the final five games of the season. Towards the end of the season, he entered the NCAA’s transfer portal.

This decision allowed Spencer to move to Rutgers. There, he played for the Scarlet Knights, which saw him as a starter. And life as a starter was evidently good for Cam, as he finished with 13.2 points per game and 2 steals per game. Not bad for his second year as a college baller!

But Spencer wouldn’t look towards the NBA just yet. The COVID-19 pandemic meant he gained an extra year of college eligibility. He ended up joining UConn to play for the Huskies that year, and he put this year to good use, leading them to a 75-60 win over Purdue, going 11-8-2 in that game.

When was Cam Spencer drafted in the NBA?

Finally, his time as a college baller was over, and Spencer was now eligible for the NBA Draft. And when the time came, he was selected with the 53rd overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2024 NBA Draft. However, this wasn’t where his draft night ended.

The Pistons immediately traded Cam Spencer to the Memphis Grizzlies. At Memphis, he signed the aforementioned two-way contract that led him to playing with the Hustle in the G-League.

It’s been quite the start for Cam in the NBA. In just a few months, he went from playing in the G-League to tussling with an NBA legend. Only 24, Cam has all the time in the world to prove that he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as someone like KD!
