Luka Doncic‘s 36-point basket-scoring performance has left the NBA community in awe of the Mavericks guard. However, NBA analyst Brian Windhorst seems to have gone overboard with his Lionel Messi reference for the Mavs player. Yet Messi is considered the GOAT of soccer, and Luka is still a good player. Therefore, comparing him with such a player can be too much. Though he can be compared with greats of basketball like Michael Jordan or LeBron James when compared on their contemporary age basis. Still, it is difficult to get either one of them for the Mavs guard.
However, one of the basketball fans ended the debate by pulling out an old clip of Luka revealing his idol. In the clip where Luka seemingly seems much younger, in his 19s or 20s, when asked who he grew up admiring in the NBA, the former replied, “LeBron James.” Apparently, it was the Lakers star who pushed the Slovenian guard to push his limits and make it into the league. But ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst, after claiming that Doncic resembles Messi, further stated on the show ‘Get Up,’ “He grew up idolizing soccer players. …he did not grew up dreaming of being Michael Jordan.”
They force comps for EVERY other legend..
Steph got tons of flowers for Caitlin Clark..
Ant was just MJ/Kobe..But what Luka said on wax is forgotten😂😂😂.
“He didn’t grow up dreaming of being Michael Jordan”Because he wanted to be Bron, nigga. https://t.co/ejVWWokp9k pic.twitter.com/Rktrf1UAj4

Apparently, Windy’s claim seemed to be wrong this time, as the Mavs player himself confessed who his idol was. Moreover, it does not always mean that the player will play like his idol. It’s the skills that they want to acquire from their role models. The modifications, the differences in physical abilities, and the training all matter and make a player different from another.
Does Luka Doncic really resemble LeBron James’ playstyle?
Earlier in March this year, Kendrick Perkins drew comparisons of Doncic and Lakers superstar LeBron James. While having a chat with the SportsCenter host, Perkins got candid about Luka as he stated, “Luka Doncic is a younger version of LeBron James, minus the athleticism.” It was a fair observation that Luka still has to master the art of stamina on the court. Being compared with the Lakers superstar is great, but still, the Mavs player is far away from what LeBron was.

Yet his ball-handling abilities carry similarities to those of James. As per Perkins, Doncic’s ability to rebound and make his teammates bring out their best game is not far away from James. If the 25-year-old continues to work on his game control and scoring, he might make it big like King James. For now, he is still struggling with injuries and athletic problems.
His exhaustion is something that the Mavs need to be aware of. Yet Doncic can always turn the tables with his explosive scoring. Especially his three-pointers break the opponent’s spine on the defense. Let us know in the comments what you all think about his potential. Moreover, make sure to watch out for what Shaq’s ex-agent, Leonard Armato, shared about the marketing genius in the following video.
