Italian-American Paolo Banchero has been touted as one of the next big things in the NBA by fans and media alike. He won the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2022 while playing for the Duke Blue Devils. With a lot of expectations from the youngster, the Orlando Magic selected him as the first overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. He repaid that faith as he burst onto the scene, having a season that would earn him Rookie of the Year honors in 2023.

Paolo’s mother, Rhonda Smith-Banchero, played for the Washington Huskies at the college level. She ended her time with the Huskies with 2498 points, graduating as their all-time top scorer. She was also inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame. Rhonda Smith continued her basketball career professionally, becoming a part of the 2000 WNBA Draft.

The Sacramento Monarchs selected her in the 3rd round as the 46th overall pick in the Draft. She also played overseas before transitioning to coaching at the Holy Names Academy. Her son, Paolo, credits her as one of his biggest motivators in pursuing the sport of basketball. “I wanted to be like her,” Paolo said in an interview. “She’s my biggest critic and she’s also my biggest supporter. Never letting me slack off or take days off, she was always pushing me to be the best I could be,” he said about his mother’s influence on him.

Rhonda is an American national who played for the USA’s qualifying teams on the international level. And with her son having played for his country, her pride in him must be immeasurable. “It’s great to see your son in the USA Basketball jersey knowing that you know what it means and what it takes to get there,” is what Rhonda said about seeing her son play for the US.

Paolo’s father, Mario Banchero is of Italian descent, which is why Paolo has Italian citizenship. Both his father and his uncle played college football at the University of Washington. This is where Rhonda Smih and Mario Banchero first crossed paths.
