Mikal Bridges’ parents are Jack Bridges and Tyneeha Rivers. Most of his upbringing was shaped by his mother, Tyneeha. Rivers is from Philadelphia and took on multiple challenges. To fulfill her family’s needs, she had to balance a corporate job while attending college. Her son witnessed all her struggles, watching her work tirelessly to provide for their family. Even after coming home from work, she had another responsibility of being a mother, and she did an excellent job. She used to help her kids with their homework, and once done, she still couldn’t call it a day as she would begin doing her assignments late in the night. Despite her challenges, she instilled in Mikal the values of hustle, grit, and perseverance.
As a single parent, it becomes more difficult to navigate many obstacles, especially with growing kids. The early days were difficult. Tyneeha didn’t have much; all she had was love and the will to give kids the best opportunities she could. Despite the challenges, she didn’t let any of her kids see the weight of her struggles.

However, after a few years, she finally had a job closer to home, one that got her closer to basketball. She worked for the Philadelphia 76ers in their Human Resources Department. However, she was deeply involved with the team when Mikal was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 2018. That career path didn’t last long; she shifted her career to the health department. She became the Chief People Officer at Curaleaf, a health and wellness company. She didn’t stop there either; Tyneeha also co-hosts a podcast called “Tipping The Scales,” where she shares her expertise in corporate leadership and life lessons.
Just because you have a mother who worked in basketball didn’t mean Mikal’s journey was always smooth, though. His path to the NBA started with a redshirt year at Villanova, a decision that could have frustrated many young athletes. But he handled it with incredible maturity. “He’s a special kid,” said his assistant coach at Villanova. It was during these challenging times that Mikal relied heavily on his mother for support and guidance. After all, Tyneeha knew exactly what it meant to face tough times head-on.

Looking back, the hooper often credits his mother for his character, focus, and discipline. The lessons Tyneeha imparted weren’t just about basketball; they were about life. Mikal’s impressive defense on the court mirrors the tenacity his mother displayed in life. Both have long wingspans, a trait Mikal inherited from his mother, who once joked that she “has ridiculously long, crazy arms.”
Her impact on Mikal extends beyond the basketball court. Her journey helped him see the value of working hard for what you want, no matter how tough things may get. In many ways, Mikal’s success is also a tribute to her unwavering determination. Even now, as he competes at the highest level, he remains grateful for everything Tyneeha did to support him. “She’s a big-time lady,” said Kyle Neptune, Mikal’s assistant coach at Villanova. “Being around her, you understand why he’s so focused.”
Despite all the dark clouds that loomed in the past, the family has seen sunshine today. Thanks to Tyneeha, she’s not just a mother; she’s a mentor, a role model, and a source of strength. Now, as Mikal continues to make his mark with the New York Knicks, it’s clear that her influence remains at the core of everything he does.
