How do you keep playing the game of your life when life keeps throwing curveballs at you? That’s a question Dereck Lively II has had to answer far earlier than most. Before the bright lights of Duke. Before the NBA Draft night. Even before his dominance as a 7’1” giant in the paint, something far deeper than basketball shaped Lively’s life. It was love, loss, and the bond he had with his parents that shaped it.
His story isn’t just about rebounds and rim protection. It’s about a mother who fought cancer with the same intensity her son now brings to the court. A father whose absence still echoes. And a kid who channelled all of it into the fuel for greatness.
So when you see Dereck Lively II dominating for the Dallas Mavericks, just know, behind that massive frame is a son playing for something bigger. But the question lies, who are the parents of this giant player? And how did they help him shape his career? Let’s find out.

Who are Dereck Lively’s parents?
Lively didn’t just get his height and hoop instincts from his mom. He got his heart. Kathy Drysdale wasn’t your average sports mom. A Penn State legend in her own right, she dominated the paint long before her son did. We’re talking school records, marketing gigs with the 76ers, and decades of commitment to women’s basketball. But off the court? She was the glue holding it all together.
And then life pulled no punches. Doctors diagnosed Kathy with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and she fought it for over a decade. Through every hospital visit, every setback, she still showed up to games. Still made sure her son knew she believed in him. Lively was just 20 when she passed in April 2024.
“My heart breaks saying goodbye to the most important person in the world to me, my best friend, my superhero, my biggest cheerleader and mom, Kathy Drysdale,” he wrote on Instagram. You could feel the weight in every word.

Dereck Lively Career Stats
Lively attended Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where he quickly made a name for himself as a dominant force on the basketball court. At 7’1″, he possessed exceptional shot-blocking ability and defensive talent.
At Duke, Lively continued to showcase his defensive skills, earning spots on both the ACC All-Defensive and All-Freshman teams during the 2022–2023 season. His ability to protect the rim and alter shots made him a key component of the Blue Devils’ defense. While his offensive game was still developing, his impact on the court was undeniable, setting the stage for his transition to the professional level.
The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted Lively 12th overall in the 2023 NBA draft and then immediately traded him to the Dallas Mavericks.
