As the 2023 FIBA World Cup fever rises in the air, the hoops community gears up the exciting basketball action. More than that, the absence of the NBA in the summer further excited fans’ expectations. Interestingly, Team USA had a disappointing outing in the last edition of the FIBA world cup despite having stars from the NBA. Moreover, apart from crashing out of the tournament, the team also missed out on a massive milestone. If not Team USA, which country won the 2019 FIBA World Cup?

The current format of the world cup has 32 teams split across eight groups with four teams each, with the 2023 WC set in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Compared to the 2019 roster, Team USA has picked up a reasonably young side with three debutants. Notably, Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell, who played a crucial role in reaching the quarter-finals in 2019, didn’t make it to the roster.

Rudy Gobert led France kicked out Team USA in 2019, ending their 58-game winning streak since 2006. Moreover, the team finished in a disappointing seventh position, raising concerns in the NBA world, reported CBS Sports. It reminded the US basketball fans of the time before the establishment of the ‘Redeem Team’. After topping the group stages with a clean record, winning all 8 games, the team fell short in the final round against France and Serbia.

However, on the other end, Spain came out all guns blazing, claiming their second gold in the FIBA world cup. Notably, Spain’s roster comprised many NBA stars like Juancho Hernangomez, Ricky Rubio, Marc Gasol, and many more. These fiery Spain stars took on Argentina in the Finals and registered a comfortable 95-75 win. Notably, Marc Gasol became the first non-American to win NBA and WC in the same year.

After the disappointing exit in the 2019 edition, Team USA has created a fairly new roster without any superstar players.
