Scoot Henderson lives by a motto: “Overly Determined to Dominate.” The future face of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise works countless hours honing his craft. This mantra is something Henderson came up with himself. According to the young point guard, this represents his unique journey to the league as well as his approach towards life off the court.

Just like his motto, there’s a lot of unknown stuff about Henderson’s life beyond the court. Like many of us assume that when you’re a five-star recruit, you won’t be good at your studies. However, Henderson isn’t cut from the same cloth as he doubled his coursework during high school to finish a year early, and that too with a 3.5 grade point average! So, we’ll now know more about the Trail Blazers star’s family roots.

Scoot Henderson is well-known for his elite athleticism and eagle-eyed vision. But have you ever wondered where he gets that from? Well, born to parents Chris and Crystal Henderson, Scoot got into sports fairly early in his life. That’s because of his father, Chris, who’s a coach and trainer and naturally trained his son. On the flip side, his mother works in the healthcare industry.

So, both parents helped Scoot develop into the talent he is today. Chris and Crystal now own and operate a training facility, “Next Play 360” in Marietta, Georgia. The couple are American citizens through and through, belonging to African-American descent. That means Scoot is also of African-American heritage.

Interestingly, Henderson has six siblings. Yes! He’s the second youngest in the family. Scoot’s family moved from New York to Georgia before his birth, seeking better opportunities. Moreover, he has three sisters, all of whom are NCAA Division I hoopers. So, it’s safe to say that basketball runs through the Henderson family’s veins.

When you’re a five-star recruit, it is only obvious to get all the attention. The same was the case with Scoot Henderson as he received offers from the likes of Ole Miss, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and a few others. However, to everyone’s surprise, Henderson took a totally different route and decided to join the NBA G League Ignite over the other offers. At just 17, Henderson became the youngest professional player in the entire country.

He signed a hefty $1 million two-year contract with the NBA G League Ignite. The player developmental coach Thomas Scott saw the hunger in Scoot’s eyes as he recalls. “You could tell that basketball was on his mind before he went to bed,” Scott said. He further added, “I think that says a lot about somebody that young or any kind of ball player.” Well, during his first season in the G League, Henderson mostly came off the bench and started just four out of ten games.

However, he still averaged a solid 14.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists. It was the following season when he really showed up averaging an improved 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.5 assists. After this successful stint, his hard work paid off, as he was selected as the third overall pick by the Trail Blazers in 2023. Since then, Henderson has been paving his path in the league as he hopes to become a star player in the future.
