It was January 14, 2022, when Lonzo Ball, a former number two pick appeared in an NBA game. The ailment in his left knee required a cartilage transplant. For two years, rigorous rehab is all that he went through in hopes of returning as soon as possible. Finally, at media day, he provided a positive update on his return. “I’ve been able to do everything, pretty much,” he told reporters. Now, his comeback has a date.
In the weeks leading up to the preseason, there were encouraging signs about the former Laker making a healthy return this season. The Bulls shared videos of his working out with full intensity, trotting without any discomfort. Still, in the first few games they opted to keep him away from the demands of the NBA. But as Ball said he is “expecting to play the last two”. ESPN’s Shams Charania also confirmed Lonzo Ball’s participation.

The 26-year-old’s much-anticipated return to the NBA will come on Wednesday when the Bulls take on the Minnesota Timberwolves in their fourth preseason game of the season. Ball becomes the first player in the history of the NBA to return back to basketball after having a cartilage transplant done.
Since making an appearance on media day last year, the only thought that Lonzo Ball has held is making his return. His teammate spoke highly of his ambition to make the improbable comeback. Zach Lavine, in particular, appreciated his drive. And after two years of strenuous labor and repetitive rehab, Ball is ready to be part of the Bulls franchise once again.
But how can Chicago use him?
Lonzo Ball is an influential component but his integration will be slow
Even though it has been weeks since he started 5-on-5 practice, Ball won’t immediately become the starting point guard of the Bulls. Given the severity of his injury, the return is bound to be gradual. Josh Giddey will take on the role of the starting point guard until Lonzo Ball regains the appropriate fitness to return.

But even though his participation will have certain limitations, his impact is unquestionable. At 6’6″, Ball is naturally bigger than other point guards in the league. As a playmaker, his instincts bring cohesion to the Bulls. “He’s an elite point guard that certainly warrants being out on the court a lot,” head coach Billy Donovan said about the former number 2 pick.
With his size comes defensive versatility. Ball is a disruptive and engaged defensive presence who can supply well as a secondary shot blocker. In the last healthy season, he did play in, he averaged 1.8 steals, among the highest in the league, and boasted a defensive rating of 107, the third-best on their roster.
But most important is his improved shooting which provides the Bulls with various offensive options. He can hunt spaces to be effective off the ball and is a highly efficient shooter. However, with his return coming after such a long time with the physical changes, monitoring him will be vital during this season.

Donovan revealed that Ball will be tested with varied minutes. If he does show a seamless transition, then the Bulls will feel confident to extend his minutes. But till then, the franchise feels it’s their responsibility to ensure Lonzo Ball can have a long career, and hence won’t try to overload him, at least until they are certain that it holds no risks.
