The help that Stephen Curry needed is almost here. The Golden State Warriors are making moves, striking a deal with the Brooklyn Nets to bring in Dennis Schroder, per league sources. But there’s a catch. The trade won’t become official until Sunday because the NBA hasn’t made De’Anthony Melton, whose $12.8 million expiring contract is part of the deal, eligible to be traded yet. His contract, signed over the summer, has to clear league rules first. Sources say the agreement is basically locked in, with only draft compensation left to finalize.

Warriors fans won’t have to wait long to see Schroder suit up. He’s expected to hit practice early next week and could debut on Thursday against the Memphis Grizzlies. Honestly, this move feels like a shot of adrenaline for a team that’s been struggling to find its groove. Let’s see if the German hoopster can help get things back on track.

The move comes at a reasonable cost for a vet guard averaging 18.4 points and hitting 38.7% of his triples per game. Unfortunately, Melton’s involvement in the trade is bittersweet—he tore his ACL and is out for the rest of the season after showing promise in his six games with Golden State.

The Warriors and Nets have been talking about a trade for weeks, and this deal fits perfectly. Golden State wants to push for a championship, majorly using a stash of draft picks, while Brooklyn focuses on rebuilding.

But it looks like Steve Kerr and Co. couldn’t get their hands on Cam Johnson. Instead, the Warriors opted for a simpler, more cost-effective swap, which addresses their immediate needs while keeping their young players intact. The deal also keeps Golden State just below the first apron, which is crucial as they stay under the hard cap.

Is Dennis Schroder the big star that Joe Lacob and Co. wanted?

Is Schroder the best player the Warriors could have traded for? Golden State desperately needs a guy to help when Curry’s not on the floor, and Schroder might be the right answer. That said, they still need someone who can put up points. Curry is the only Warrior averaging more than 18 points per game, which is a problem in today’s high-scoring NBA generation.

Schroder is putting up 18.4 points and a career-high 6.6 assists this season, but he’s not known for being a big-time scorer. Even so, this move makes sense for the Warriors right now—it’s a calculated decision that fits their needs.

Schroder might play a key role in the Warriors’ backcourt. He’ll bring scoring and help with pick-and-roll plays, stepping in to run the offense when Steph isn’t on the floor. Kerr and Co. believe he can also complement Curry in certain lineups, especially with his relentless defense.

This deal, however, doesn’t rule out GSW making a bigger splash before the trade deadline. Schroder’s $13 million bag gives them options for future trades if needed. Plus, they were able to grab him without losing any future first-round picks, keeping their asset pool solid for the long term.

Or is Schroder just a small piece in a grand scheme of things? The Warriors have always fantasized about pairing LeBron James with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. But, will Schroder be part of the deal? LeBron waiving his no-trade clause still feels like a long shot, but if that somehow happens, any trade the Lakers pull off would likely have to include Bronny James as well.
