The playoffs are here. And the Milwaukee Bucks are rolling into them with serious momentum. An 8-game winning streak to close out the regular season has fans buzzing with confidence. But just as the postseason lights flicker on, there’s one massive question hanging in the air: where’s Dame? Damian Lillard, the team’s closer, the man built for big moments, won’t be on the floor for Game 1 against the Pacers. And yeah, that stings. However, there is a silver lining. In fact, the latest update might just give Bucks fans a reason to breathe easy.

After being MIA for a concerning calf injury, Damian Lillard is now back. “We’re thrilled for Dame,” said GM Jon Horst, emphasizing that his recovery has followed expert protocols from start to finish. Sure, he’s sitting out Game 1, but with contact workouts starting up and the green light from top doctors at the Mayo Clinic, Lillard’s return could come sooner than expected.

Damian Lillard has officially been cleared for full basketball activity. That’s right! His deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the right calf has resolved, and he’s no longer on blood-thinning medication. While he’ll probably choose to sit out Game 1, the Bucks’ brotherhood is optimistic about a return later in their second game vs the Pacers on the 22nd of April.

GM Jon Horst, in a statement, said, “Our priority has always been Dame’s health. We’re grateful to our medical team for diagnosing and treating his DVT at an early stage, and for the world-renowned hematology specialists at Mayo Clinic.” The Bucks tip off their playoff run Saturday at 1 p.m. ET, and even without Dame in the opener, this is a massive step forward.

While Lillard’s return might not be immediate, the Bucks have clearly planned his recovery carefully. “Every step of Dame’s recovery has been at the direction of world-class medical professionals and their specific and strict protocols that have allowed for Dame’s safe and healthy return to play”, Horst added. Earlier this week, a scan showed significant improvement, allowing Lillard to ramp up his basketball activity.

At 34, Dame finished the regular season ranked 10th in scoring (24.9 PPG) and 10th in assists (7.1 APG), notching his ninth All-Star selection. His leadership and shot-making are impossible to replace. But the Bucks have held their own. Going 10-4 in their last 14 games without him and riding into the postseason on an eight-game winning streak.

And if there’s one thing Milwaukee fans know all too well, it’s navigating playoff adversity. Every postseason since their 2021 title run has seen a key star go down. Middleton in 2022, Giannis in 2023, and both Giannis and Dame last year. In fact, Lillard’s current situation is already drawing uncomfortable comparisons to Giannis’ untimely absence from last season’s first round. But this time around, the vibe feels different. Lillard’s ahead of schedule, the team is hot, and the core is clicking. As Dame ramps up, the Pacers may be catching the Bucks right before they get their full firepower back. And that could spell trouble for Indiana.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Lillard and Giannis' chemistry lead the Bucks to another championship despite past playoff injuries?

Dame unpacks his off-court connection with the Greek Freak

While Lillard’s recovery and return timeline may be dominating headlines, his recent comments on Giannis Antetokounmpo have sparked just as much buzz. Speaking candidly, Dame revealed that his chemistry with the Greek Freak isn’t just about on-court synergy. It all comes down to mutual respect and a shared hunger to win.

“It was a matter of us getting to know each other as men,” Lillard shared. That makes you realize this partnership isn’t just about basketball. It’s about building trust, understanding how the other moves, thinks, and leads. And honestly, for a team like the Bucks chasing another deep playoff push, that kind of connection could be the difference-maker when things get tough.

Given the Bucks’ repeated struggles with injuries during past postseason runs, their two biggest stars uniting now couldn’t come at a better time. Dame’s analogy of their dynamic being like peanut butter and jelly says it all! If either one dominates too much, the balance is thrown off. But when they trust each other and let one another shine? That’s when the magic happens.

“We got to trust that we both want that for each other,” Lillard emphasized. With their connection steadily growing stronger off the court, Milwaukee fans have every reason to believe that once both stars are healthy and locked in, this could be the partnership that finally brings playoff stability. And maybe even another banner, to the Cream City.
