Is Adrian Wojnarowski worth the big bucks, or is ESPN overpaying for his insider scoops?

“I leave with overwhelming gratitude for countless mentor and colleagues.” Adrian Wojnarowski wrote in his farewell post. For over two decades, Wojnarowski has been the ultimate source of breaking news in the NBA world. This has earned him the moniker “Woj” cementing his status as the most influential journalist in the basketball circles. His X account with over 5 million followers became a virtual newswire for the NBA. He used his trademark “Woj Bombs” to share trade news, signings, and major league development news before any official announcement.

Now Wojnarowski has sent shockwaves in the journalism world. He announced his retirement from ESPN and also his departure from journalism after 37 years. As the news legend sets his foot on a new chapter in his life, let’s see the numbers he pulled during his time at ESPN.

No one would’ve thought that Woj would go on this road so soon. Just two years ago, in 2022, Woj signed a new contract with ESPN. According to the deal, he was supposed to get $35 million in five years with a $7 million income annually. His contract was made to align with another ESPN journalist, Adam Schefter. Schefter got $10 million more on his deal for his seniority with the organization as he joined it in 2009, whereas Woj joined ESPN in 2017. Adrian Wojnarowski had a net worth of $6 million in 2023.

So the question arises, where is the reporter going? The 55-year-old announced on Wednesday that he will join as a general manager of the basketball team at St. Bonaventure University. The role of the GM will include responsibilities like NIL allocations, recruiting and helping the current coach of the team Mark Schmidt. Although the salary he would be getting in St. Bonaventure hasn’t been disclosed, it can speculated to be a lot less than what he was earning in ESPN. The coach of the team, Schmidt, earns around $1.8 million per year and the GM will offer more than that. From this, we can say Woj is not joining the program for the money but for the special connection, he holds with the place. Yes, it’s a special connection because he is an alumnus of the school.

Woj graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1991 and received an honorary doctorate in 2022. Before joining ESPN, Wojnarowski worked for organizations like Fresno Bee, The Record, and Yahoo Sports. In the recent Farewell Letter that Woj shared through his X account, he emphasized how big of a role journalism played in his life. “This craft transformed my life but I’ve decided to retire from ESPN and the news industry. I understand the commitment required in my role and it’s an investment I’m no longer willing to make. Time isn’t in endless supply and I want to spend mine in ways that are more personally meaningful,” read the caption of the post.
