Is Gregg Popovich the Yoda to Wembanyama's Luke Skywalker in this NBA saga?

The Alien. A nickname that suits Victor Wembanyama perfectly because of his 7’4 frame, but more importantly, his unique skills on the hardwood. And the hooper has fully embraced that tag, even debuting Nike’s new Zoom GT Hustle 2 ‘Alien’ during last season’s All-Star Weekend in April. Sure enough, as Wemby prepares for tonight’s home opener in San Antonio, he will live up to that nickname once again, as he honors a beloved movie franchise while celebrating a massive accomplishment from last season.

Yes, Wemby will celebrate his historic first season in the league, which led to him winning the Rookie of the Year trophy. On that special occasion, he’s decided to pay homage to the Star Wars franchise by wearing the ‘Wookiee of the Year’ Nike GT Hustles.

As expected, the sneakers have shades of the iconic character from the $10.3 billion franchise, fully uniquely covered in brown and black fur similar to that of a Wookiee.

Victor Wembanyama’s choice should not come as a surprise because he is a massive Star Wars fan and even revealed his Top three characters in a recent interview, “I got Obi-Wan (Kenobi) up there. Like the best characters? I need to go with Luke (Skywalker) at two, then Han Solo and Annikin (Skywalker).”

When asked who his starting five would be from all characters, he claimed Chewbacca, the ultimate Wookiee warrior, would be his Center. It looks like Wemby is now taking that role upon himself with his customized shoes! But who were the other 4 star hoopers?

While Wemby picked Chewbacca as his Center, the hooper also had the rest of the positions well thought out already. “I’m going with Yoda at point guard. Then, shooting guard, I gotta go with Han Solo. At the 3, I’m gonna go with Obi Won, and at the 4, Darth Vader,” the youngster revealed. Now, that’s a lineup with some force, if you ask me! Moreover, it seems like the massive cult franchise has had a huge impact on the Frenchman’s life, as he loves to reference it from time to time.

Following his dominant rookie season, the Frenchman shared a post on Instagram looking back on his year. In the carousel of images, the hooper shared a picture of him standing next to Gregg Popovich and picking up some words of wisdom from the veteran coach. Surprisingly, in the very next image, he showed a young Luke Skywalker learning from the iconic Master Yoda. Well, that analogy broke the internet, as it fueled the fans to further connect the youngster to his ‘Alien’ nickname.

Obviously, that’s how he sees his relationship with Coach Pop and it has done wonders for Victor Wembanyama as he finished last season leading the league in blocks and averaging 21.4 points.

Well, as he takes on the court in his new ‘Wookiee’ sneakers, ‘May the force be with him.’
