Is Tyronn Lue's commitment to his hometown more impactful than his NBA achievements?

“I have seen every aspect of basketball that you can see as a player, and I think they can relate to that, and I can understand them.” This is how Tyronn Lue reflects on his NBA journey. From winning 3 NBA championships to leading the LA Clippers into their first Western Conference Finals, his journey from a player to a head coach is remarkable. His depth of experience and ability to connect with individuals showcase his understanding of their challenges on and off the court. But what led to this leadership was his personal experience. Let’s delve into Ty Lue’s roots and background, exploring how his heritage has shaped his journey in basketball and life.

Where is Tyronn Lue from? Is he Mexican?

Tyronn Jamar Lue was born on May 3, 1977, in Mexico, Missouri to parents Ron Lue and Kim Miller. He also has a brother, Gregory Miller, and a sister, Shakea Lue. But did you know he has mixed roots? Lue’s ancestral roots are African-American, while also binding him with Mexican ancestry, and his nationality is American! While not much is known about his family, his dad wasn’t too involved with Ty, so, all the upbringing responsibility was on mum. His maternal uncle, Jay Graves, inspired him to be an athlete.

“You don’t see celebrities or professional athletes (in Mexico). Growing up not having that, my uncle was my idol. Guys, you grow up watching play high school sports. Those were your idols,” Lue told in an interview with the Undefeated.

Jay Graves was a high school and college basketball player. Lue and Graves played together in Mexico, but, “back in Mexico, you don’t get a lot of opportunities. Colleges are not coming to recruit guys in Mexico. I thought it was better to go near Kansas City, which is a bigger city and guys were being recruited by D-I school. So that’s why I went to Kansas City,” the hooper explained.

Fast forward to today, a street is named after him in Mexico! “Tyronn Lue Boulevard,” isn’t it great?

“Seeing Tyronn Lue from Mexico, Missouri running a billion-dollar corporation…to see that from a guy who comes from that small town, you can inspire a lot of Black kids. No matter how tough things get, how hard things get, it’s bigger than me,” Lue admitted. However, his commitment to Mexico is not just limited to being an inspiration, but also extends to his philanthropic efforts there.
