Anthony Edwards singing at the Olympics—Is this the most unexpected moment in sports this year?

There’s always a song that leaves a lasting impression. Especially during a global event, a particular song can even captivate an entire generation. For instance, the song ‘Waka Waka’ by Shakira during the 2010 FIFA WC became a global sensation. Most importantly, the song still leaves people shaking their legs for its tune. Similarly, the 2024 Paris Olympics has ‘the song’ that has been echoing across the stadiums. This time, the song not only left the fans in a frenzy but also Team USA’s rising superstar, Anthony Edwards.

Compared to other events in the Olympics, basketball games attracted a lot of global attention. Especially when the US side took the court. The arenas were jam-packed because of the star-studded roster. Moreover, the arenas always had an electrifying energy throughout because of the nature of the game. Notably, the semi-final clash between Team USA and Serbia turned into a blockbuster action after LeBron James & Co. orchestrated a late comeback.

While the fans already went haywire because of the game, the songs further doubled it down. (Well, it’s almost time to reveal the song.) This particular song had a special influence. It doesn’t need any basketball action to keep the audience hooked. It’s the 1997 song, ‘Freed From Desireby the Italian singer Gala Rizzato. This late 90s classic blares right when the players storm out of the tunnel and after the game, leaving them with no option other than grooving to the spellbinding music.

If not for others, Anthony Edwards seemed to have fallen in love with the song. As per San Antonio Express News, the shooting guard ran out of the tunnel, screaming, “Freed from desire!” at the top of his voice. Moreover, it’s not only when the arena DJ played the song, Ant-man seemed to have the song at the tip of his mouth. Team USA’s coach Steve Kerr revealed that Edwards does “energetic acappella renditions” of the song, as per the same report.

Speaking of the tunnel entry songs, one cannot escape without speaking about the 90s Chicago Bulls‘ entry song. ‘Sirius’ by The Alan Parsons Project became synonymous with the Bulls team in the late 90s. Moreover, just like how ‘Freed From Desire’ captured Anthony Edwards’ heart, ‘Sirius’ has also captured MJ’s heart. Even after three decades, Michael Jordan seemed to be in awe of the song.

Recently, a video of MJ vibing to the saxophone version of the song went viral on social media. The NBA legend, who maintained a low-key profile after his retirement, can only be spotted in viral videos like this. Saxophonist Dimasax made a pleasant interruption when Jordan was having a meal with his family and friends at a French restaurant in Greece. Dimasax began playing the Sirius theme out of nowhere and left the legend in surprise.
