Is Bronny James' NBA 2K rating a slap in the face to his potential and hard work?

Bronny James has been subjected to scrutiny ever since he got drafted. And it seems he’ll carry it on his back lifelong. The high expectations from the 20-year-old stem from his father’s legacy that he got. The only chance that LeBron James‘ son got to perform was Summer League till now. He tallied 7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists during the whole Summer games. However, what was worth noting is that he only shot 13% from the arc. It is concerning, since it’s much below average for a shooting guard at the NBA level. And now it looks like NBA 2K25 has put him quite close to utter disrespect for the successor of the James family!

Despite Bronny’s wish for a “respectable 80 or 81″ NBA 2k rating, he has got 68 OVR as per NBA2kW.com. Notably, his father, LeBron, got a 78 overall rating during his rookie year. However, LeBron was a first-round pick with great hype, while Bronny James is just a second-rounder with an overall 55th draft pick. Since the start of the offseason, Bronny has not shut down with any of his not-so-impactful Summer League performances. That’s why the Lakers front office might send him with the South Bay Lakers to the G-League to nurture his skills.

However, it’ll shatter the dreams of LeBron James playing with his son and might also put shame on the James family. Apparently, the lowest NBA 2k ranking ever assigned to a player is 40 OVR. It belonged to the ‘White Mamba,’ Brian Scalabrine, during his stint with the Chicago Bulls(2011-12). It was his NBA 2k12 overall ranking, after which he retired. He was also a second-round pick like Bronny James. And he averaged 1.1 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.5 assists in the 2011-12 season. However, he is not the only one to get to the lowest spot on NBA 2k12. Brian is just at the top of the lowest; moreover, there are other players also who recorded lower NBA 2k ratings than Bronny James!

Players apart from Bronny James who have lower OVR rating in NBA 2k history

Before coming to the middle ones, the one who shared the lowest spot alongside Brian was Byron Mullens (OKC). Coming off a devastating season, Byron only averaged 1.9 points and 1.8 rebounds in the previous season. However, his game turned over when he got to the Charlotte Bobcats (G-League) the next year, as he averaged 9.3 points there. Still, his league performance was never so impressive.

Another player with only two points away from the lowest ranking was Jerome James. He didn’t play after the 2009-10 season. However, he got his place in the NBA 2k10 with only 42 OVR. The reason might be the dull performance he delivered for the New York Knicks that season. He only averaged 3 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 0 assists that season.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Bronny James' NBA 2K rating a slap in the face to his potential and hard work?

Have an interesting take?

The next name on the list is surprising, as he is an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards. Alexis Ajinca, a round-one pick, played for two teams in the 2010-11 season. The first one was the Dallas Mavericks, while the second one was the Toronto Raptors. He was pretty good in the second half of that season, as he averaged 4.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.3 assists with the Raptors. However, his excruciatingly bad season with the Mavs might have put him down, as he only averaged 2.9 pts and 1.7 rebounds with them. That’s why his overall rating for NBA 2k11 was 43. In the later stages of his career, his performance turned over dramatically. At the end of 2017, he left the league with a 5.3 points average, representing his improvement.

So, it can’t be denied that a 2k rating might be over-exaggerating. Also, a single bad season can’t determine a player’s potential. Still, those ratings matter for the league players.

However, Bronny James just might have dodged the shame on James Family from $2 billion 2k’s OVR history by 28 rankings. However, he could not save himself from the karma of the Summer League.

Escaping the lowest 2k OVR history, Bronny James is still the lowest in NBA 2k25!

Though Bronny saved his skin in 2k history, he is still the lowest 2k25 rookie from the 2024 NBA Draft class. From an optimistic perspective, he shares the rank with 16 other players. Some of the names present on that list above Bronny James are Juan Nunez, Ajay Mitchell, Jaylen Wells, Oso Ighodaro, Nikola Djurisic, and Pelle Larsson. Coming to the top performers on the list, it features Zaccharie Risacher and Alexandre Sarr. Both of them have got 75 OVR.

Bronny James has not performed badly in comparison to his fellow draftee, Dalton Knecht. The Lakers pulled him from the first round with their no. 17 draft pick. Still, he has 70th overall ranking in the NBA 2k25. But no matter how many optimistic words are poured, Bronny will always carry the lowest 2k rating in James’ family.
