The more a sportsperson becomes famous, the more his/her ethnicity comes into discussion. It should be noted that there were 73.2 per cent of black players in the NBA in 2021, as per racial equality activist Richard Lapchick. Notably, Stephen Curry has been the face of the league for almost more than a decade. However, if you are new to the basketball world, the first thought that’ll race through our mind after watching the Chef will leave us confused whether he is a White or European. Well, the freshman in the NBA fanbase will fall for it because that’s not the ethnicity Stephen Curry belongs to.
Stephen Curry’s ethnicity: exploring the cultural roots of the Warrior
Stephen Curry’s father, Dell Curry, is an African American who was born in Fort Defiance, Virginia. However, when it comes to difference makers, credit goes to Steph’s mom, Sonya Curry. She is of mixed descent as her fathee Cleive Ester Adams was an African-American while her mother, Candy Adams, is a Haitian, born there in the 1940s. Apparently, she left her homeland and gave birth to Sonya in Radford, Virginia. Therefore, Stephen Curry is also of mixed ethnicity, including Creole, African-American and Haitian.

However, the skin tone that Stephen Curry got from his mother, Sonya Curry, often made people misunderstand Warrior‘s ethnicity. How? Well, it’s story time!
How skin color always left people guessing and baffling about Steph and his mom Sonya Curry
Since Sonya Curry was a little fairer due to a mix of Haitian descent, people misunderstood her as Caucasian or White! Yes, you read it right. When Dell Curry married Sonya Curry, players in Charlotte Hornets told each other that the NBA players had married a white woman. Even the team was not sure about the response of the fans. Later, when the couple found out about it, there was no way to respond as the community thought she was Caucasian only because she was a fair-skinned African-American woman.
Also, since Stephen Curry grew up in a wealthy family and was light-skinned due to his ethnicity, people judged him. In 2017, during the Dray Day podcast, his longtime buddy, Draymond Green, revealed the truth, “Steph is light-skinned, so they want to make him out to be soft. So, everybody just wanted to make him out to be this soft, jump-shooting guy, and he continued to get better and better and better.”
