From Montreal to Dallas: Olivier-Maxence Prosper’s baby steps to the world of hoops

Prosper’s journey to the NBA wasn’t typical, and that’s what makes it so compelling. Growing up in Montreal, he didn’t have the usual setup many future NBA stars have. He started at L’Académie Ste-Thérèse, but it didn’t have a basketball team. Yet, even without that foundation, Prosper’s love for basketball drove him forward. He wasn’t waiting for the perfect environment—he was creating his path.

He was just 16 when he took a bold step. He wanted to apply to a school with a strong basketball program, so he enrolled at Lake Forest Academy in Illinois, a school of his dreams. When you are around people of the same interests and even better than you, it pushes you into new challenges, and that’s what exactly happened with him and Prosper embraced it. It was at Lake Forest that he truly started to blossom as a player. His skills were undeniable, but what stood out most was his determination to play against some of the best players.

After a year, the hoopster made yet another life-changing decision: his transfer to the NBA Academy Latin America in Mexico City. This was where his journey took on an international flair. The NBA Academy was a place where top-tier prospects honed their skills, and he didn’t just fit in—he thrived.

However, his hard work paid off at the end of high school. He was rated a four-star recruit! So he committed to Clemson University. As a freshman, averaged 2.5 points per game. It was a dream come true, but the transition to college basketball wasn’t as smooth as he might have hoped. Despite a weak start, he never let it shake his confidence. Instead, he used it as fuel.

After one season, the hooper decided to transfer to Marquette. The move was pivotal for his development. At Marquette, he started to shine. In his first season with the Golden Eagles, he averaged 6.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. But it was his junior year that caught the attention of scouts. Prosper averaged 12.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game. Who knew his growth would lead him to the NBA so early? His performances at the NBA Draft Combine added to his profile.

The 2023 NBA Draft was a dream come true for him. The Sacramento Kings selected him 24th overall, but he was quickly traded to the Dallas Mavericks. That trade marked the beginning of his professional career. In July 2023, he signed with the Mavs. But his fate has some other plans as he was sent to the G League with the Texas Legends.
